The quest for creative collaboration continues! 🍳✨

This year has been a bit of a whirlwind. I’ve been helping Islands of Brilliance (IOB) develop their first Artist In Residency (AIR) program, and in the process, I've been diving into their Digital Academy series—including the aptly named Collab Quest.

As a mentor for IOB for several years, I’ve always found that I gain so much from every interaction (hopefully as much as I give!). What I find especially inspiring about these workshops is that they truly feel like creative sprints or design intensives. The growth and creativity of every participant is incredible to see, and I’m finding my own work growing in new ways, too.

The Quest: Design a unique mascot character for Toast’s fun and funky brunch atmosphere. 🥞🖌️

The Process: (Re)visiting the core principles of character design while being fueled by the raw creativity of the IOB community. Having visited Toast in the past, I knew this would be the perfect project to help in my continued process of (re)building a portfolio with more character design work.

While I feel creatively inspired by every workshop with IOB, there was something about this specific project that felt especially freeing. It allowed me to fully "Follow the Fun" and embrace the sandbox of exploration.

I’m so incredibly grateful for the IOB community and the welcome I feel in every interaction. I can’t wait to keep building out this AIR program and see what else we can create together in the Eagleknit space!

Me: I wanna write a thing where this particular "bad touch" vibes Sephiroth gets his ass handed to him on a platter.

Me, 4k words into said thing:

Cloud nods and steps towards where his Angeal always keeps the kitchen knives. He can feel the other Angeal’s eyes on his back but refuses to acknowledge anything is amiss. He collects a knife and sets it on the counter next to the cutting board that’s been laid out. Angeal starts depositing washed vegetables on the board, causing Cloud to realize one important detail: the counter is too tall for him to effectively chop said vegetables.

Grumbling, he retreats to the sitting area and grabs a stool that’s sitting off to the side. The older Cloud and Genesis have somehow folded themselves into one of the armchairs facing the kitchen and watch him with soft expressions. He wrinkles his nose and turns around to go back. These people are so weird.

So I made Tom Hardy on Sims 4 and he’s an absolute angel i can’t omfg

He met a random female sim and they’re together, and it was really unexpected because I had plans on making his wife but welp lol

Just remembered that since Essint is a subjug purple, she’s maybe technically older since she’s gonna live for damn long time. Though I guess it depends on how one views troll aging.

Personally, I trend towards more arthropodic or hemipteran biology (bug/true bug) so trolls don’t really get into senescence the way that humans do. They are born as wigglers, pupate into young trolls (light grey skin, grey irises, not as hulkingly huge), and then hit a second semi-pupation and molt into full maturity where their skin is (dark skin, filled in eyes, full body size).

So it’d be egg, first instar as wiggler, second instar as young troll, ‘true’ pupation into adult maturity (imago). I’m not saying adults don’t age. They just don’t show signs of aging associated with humans.

There would be very little variation in terms of transition times. The variety of ages comes after the full molt; trolls would have equal time to develop in the eggs, hatch as a wiggler, and hit second instar after 2-3 sweeps. They spend most of their time as young trolls, but as we go higher in the caste the long lifespan the adult stage can expect.

We can assume that 6 sweeps is still considered the 2nd instar given the Beforus trolls not being pitch dark. The lowest caste are stated to live at most 24 sweeps with a minimum of 12. So unless the Empire is recruiting trolls who have yet to reach maturity, full molt has to be sometime before 12 sweeps. So I’m favoring 9-10 sweeps for full maturity? There’d be some variation due to enviro/genetics because that’s how variation works, but I’d like to think that these rough averages hold.

(I’m always open to discussion and interaction with these thoughts if any of y’all wish!)
