SUPERHERO CAGES
by Sandra Chevrier
Montreal's @MuralFestival calls self-taught local art icon Sandra Chevrier "one of Canada’s most important and relevant artist’s today." Depicting women's ongoing challenges finding freedom from twisted societal perceptions Chevrier's acclaimed "Superhero Cages" series depicts women trapped behind comic book cages representing false expectations of beauty and perfection. While this highly visible wall on Rue Napoléon at Blvd Saint-Laurent, painted in 2018 for Mural, has been an irresistible target for tagging, this poignant visual statement shines on and as Chevrier puts it, "exposes the humanity within the superhuman." @sandrachevrier/
Spotted this @sandrachevrier mural on a long walk around the hood. I believe the homies at @thinkspace_art and @brandedarts helped make this #wheatpaste and paint mural happen! #SandraChevrier #ThinkspaceFamily #BrandedArts #artingwithhalopigg #muralism #lastreetart #losangelesstreetart (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzwA0fvHaip/?igshid=1u5o9wogbwnbh

“ALWAYS.”
by Sandra Chevrier
Thinkspace Gallery describes Montreal artist, Sandra Chevrier, as "a gaze collector, an idea chaser and a full time single mom." Rich with layers of meaning she says she "uses art not only to express the beauty and the tragedy that surrounds her but as a language." With her series Superheroes Cages she uses the falseness of comic books to 'speak' of women's struggle for freedom from perceptions of what a woman should be and should look like. By "placing women in these prisons of identity. . . . society is asking them to become superheroes." With striking and beautifully executed images and a message that resonates with so many Chevrier is selling out show after show. In Los Angeles in October, 2016, for the opening of a show at Thinkspace, she painted her first ever mural at the corner of W. 25th St. and S. Vermont Ave., then over the course of the next few weeks sold out another show—all 30 pieces. @sandrachevrier @thinkspace_art @scenesfromthesidewalk
