OH MY GOD I HAD A REVELATION
so there might be some logistical contradictions but just imagine for funsies - SANDY FROM GREASE IS THE SAME PERSON AS SANDY FROM THE OUTSIDERS (soda’s gf who moved away)
grease is what happened to her after she moved away - that summer she met danny while she was heartbroken over sodapop.
her grandparents were more well off than her parents and they bought her soc-y clothes and cleaned her up more. when she met danny she was missing feeling loved so much because soda was the most loving best bf ever so she rebounded with him and convinced herself she loved him.
he turned out to be a jerk but she deluded herself that danny did love her he just wanted to look tough (she knew all about boys wanting to be tough from her tulsa days) and that this really was normal
she changed herself into the typical greaser girl she had seen around her all her life for danny because soda wasn’t there to love her the way she was anymore
even their physical descriptions match and sandy (grease) acts like how I imagine sandy (outsiders) would act
I LOVE THIS HEADCANON SO MUCH also the grease soundtrack 🫶
dont get me wrong, i'm all for injecting nuance or alternative interpretations of sandy/soda. but also i think taking what we know at face value also says a lot of interesting stuff about sodas character and about their relationship.
like if we take for a minute that 1. soda and sandy were having sex and 2. sandy cheated on soda.
we also know that soda wanted to marry sandy even before he found out she was pregnant, which means he was probably really serious about her (as serious as he could be at 16 anyway). he didn't brag about her in bull sessions, which i take to mean he took sex with her more seriously and more personally than his random hookups. it meant something to him - not that they weren't having sex.
but also! him still wanting to marry sandy after he finds out she cheated on him? oh he is a people pleaser. he probably ignored a lot of problems or red flags in their relationship for the sake of love. we kinda see this in his relationship with his brothers, too, how pony and darry assume sodapop has no real problems because he's not talking about them and he's busy trying to get them to stop killing each other.
but also - the idea that soda didnt know sandy as well as he thought he did? ow. the idea that their fatal flaw (not talking about their problems or their real feelings) was one thing they did actually have in common? thats so much more interesting to me than just making them a soft wholesome relationship.
don’t know if i prefer the angst potential of darry was always fond of sandy and is upset and disappointed too or darry never really liked her much and soda’s so embarrassed that maybe he was right all along
Wip of Sandy sitting it Soda and Ponys bedroom
I dunno if I like this or not but regardless it was fun to draw
Having thoughts about Soda’s determination to marry Sandy in the context of the role that the legal system plays in their lives.
Soda comes from a class that’s constantly at the mercy of the legal system. Its discrimination against greasers has been the backdrop of Soda’s entire life. Once his parents die, it’s breathing down his family’s neck even more with the ever present threat of splitting up him and his brothers. Then his baby brother and one of his gang gets caught up in a murder rap and they all know the law won’t go easy on them, self defense or not. Then they witness Dally getting shot in the street, only it’s not murder, it’s not a crime, because it was done by a group of people who are legally allowed to murder.
Soda’s relationship with Sandy is the one area of his life that can be protected by and from the legal system. If they get married, their relationship is legally protected. Moreover, Sandy’s baby is legally protected whether or not he’s the father. Soda has seen up close the disadvantages for single mothers and their kids. If they get married, then legally nobody can rip her away from him. Legally, they would have more of a right to stay together than him and his brothers do, which makes no damn sense but that’s the way it is, and he’s hellbent on making the system work for him and not against him for once.
Soda goes to work one day and every customer looks at him weird. Man look at him and laugh, beaming with joy and pride, while girls get red in the face and annoyed, leaving the store without buying anything. Of course, he doesn't understand why, until Seve clocks in a few hours later and looks at him like a deer in headlights:
"Dude! You've got lipstick all over your face!"
Maybe he needs to tell Sandy she isn't allowed to kiss him before work anymore....
