I might not be around much over the next couple of weeks, as we’re at the end of The Goblin Hansel, our best Strawberry Pterodactyl’s life. He’s still with us, but we’re really just keeping him comfortable now.
Hansel came to us as a very scared, abused foster dog and never left (when I realised how uncompromising and judgy I was of potential adoptees, I knew he was ours). He was very much an unplanned third dog, but that made him even more special.
Over the years, he went on lots of adventures with his brothers Mickey and Sandy, and charmed everyone he met along the way.
After outliving Mickey and Sandy, he played a huge part welcoming his new brother, Sauron into the family. Sauron was also traumatised, scared and abused, so Hansel seemed to know how to make him feel safe and welcome.
In turn, Sauron is now stuck to Hansel like glue and gets anxious if no one is sitting with him. Humans don’t deserve dogs.
We’ve been losing a dog a year for the last couple of years and it doesn’t get easier. It hits like a tonne of bricks every time.
If you’re a pet parent, make the most of every second you get with them. It’s way too short.
I know a lot of you have been here all through Hansel’s time with us and know how special he is. We were so lucky to spend nine of his thirteen to twenty years (a mystery, but he’s oooold) with him 💜
