“Ernest Hemingway” first came to Pamplona at the age of 24 in 1923. He came as a Toronto Star newspaper reporter in search for material for his news reports. His passionate nature, open attitude and clear predisposition to get fully involved in the atmosphere meant that he had no problem in connecting with people, making his complete integration into the fiestas a very smooth process. This was how the writer’s love affair for Pamplona and the San Fermín festivities began. Hemingway visited Pamplona on nine occasions, practically all of them during the 1920s. After a long absence due to the Civil War, in which he actively participated in favour of the Second Republic, and then the Second World War, he visited Pamplona twice more, in 1953 and in 1959. Between these two visits, Hemingway was awarded with the Pullitzer Prize, in 1953, and a year later he was awarded with no less than the Nobel Prize for Literature. Three years after his first visit to Pamplona, he published his first successful novel, “Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises”, translated into Spanish with the title “Fiesta”, in which he narrates the story of a group of friends, members of the lost generation of the post Second World War period, that travel with no set destination through France and Spain. The references to Pamplona and the San Fermín festivities that appear in this novel transformed our fiestas into one of the most famous events in the world, changing the fiesta from a local celebration to having the international projection that it has today.
