Fictober Day 4: “I know you didn’t ask for this.”

“I know you didn’t ask for this.”
Sang-Chul was startled by the attention. His almost glowing light blue eyes crinkled with amusement.
Jae-Chin set a tea cup in front of both of them before sitting down.
“None of did. We couldn’t have expected it.” Sang-chul said. “I don’t blame you.”
The younger vampire gave a half-hearted smile that fled from their lips after a moment. “You should, I’m the one who talked you into it.”
“I’d like to think that even if you hadn’t, I’d still be here. We’ve seen too much already. It was only a matter of time. We all wondered it, while we were still in training. How did the other idols do it, you know? It seemed as if they never slept. As if they never got tired. And here we were the whole time struggling. And now? Now that we are the ones on the front line? It only makes sense. We have to be better than we were. Stronger. It’s just science,” he said. “You can’t dispute that.”
The inside joke brought Jae-Chin to tears, nearly falling over onto the cool floor.
Sang-Chul laughed despite himself.
The two shared a soft, quiet conversation as their watch continued. He ran a hand over Jae-Chin’s shoulder as the sun slowly began to creep from behind the tallest spires of their city. “They’ll split us up soon. Send us all over the world. It’ll be a long time before we see each other again.”
He was trying to impart some sort of wisdom, but found himself lost in Jae-Chin’s eyes instead. Jae-Chin’s eyes had been dark, with darker circles before the transition. Now they nearly glowed, light green pools that sucked him in.
“It doesn’t matter,” Jae-Chin says. “When we’re out there… we can talk to each other. I can talk to you. So we’ll be okay.”
“Yeah… yeah I guess we will,” Sang-Chul said, and gripped his teacup as if holding on for dear life.
