Sangamon River Bridge

This is where the original Illinois Central Railroad, the charter line, crossed the Sangamon River south of Decatur, Illinois. The line is now owned by the Canadian National, and therefore we have the pleasure of seeing BC Rail C44-9WL on the point.

The Pennsylvania Railroad also gained access to Decatur via the same bridge. Their line from Paris, Illinois, came due west and merged up with the Illinois Central at Hervey City, and thence into town over the same line.

Grab Shots on the Charter Line

I was surprised by this train today and tried to get turned around and in position—but simply did not have the time. What one sees here are the grab shots I attempted to salvage from the situation. It’s a shame, as the early morning light was brilliant.

This is a switch job running south on the charter line of the Illinois Central in Decatur, Illinois. The train is seen crossing the Sangamon River and then a couple of small trestles just to the south of that.

Sangamon River

Back on the Illinois Central Charter line—this is a southbound train that has just departed Decatur bound for Matoon and beyond. This bridge used to carry two tracks that supported both the IC as well as Pennsylvania traffic.
