Sanité Belair was a Haitian freedom fighter & revolutionary. She was a sergeant who bcame a lieutenant & wanted to help Haiti claim its independence. She & her husband are responsible for the uprising of almost entire en-slaved population of L’Artibonite, against their enslavers.
The Haitian Revolution is known as the only successful slave revolution in history. A process that began in 1791 until proclamation of independence was achieved in 1804. Women played a significant role bringing down their oppressors and women warriors played an essential role in the enslaved Africans struggle for freedom. The work and contributions of women is grossly overlooked and rarely celebrated . In the picture is Sanité Beliair who was born in 1781, she was a Haitian freedom fighter and revolutionary . She was a sergeant who later became a lieutenant who wanted to help Haiti claim it’s independence. She and her husband are responsible for the uprising of almost the entire en-slaved population of L’Artibonite, against their enslavers. The French would capture her and her husband and sentence them to death in 1802. She refused to die by decapitation and demanded to be executed just like her husband . At age 21 she walked to her death with bravery and defiance, refusing to wear a blindfold. Her dying words were “Viv Libète esklavaj!” (“LIBERTY, NO TO SLAVERY!”). Haiti became the first black republic 2 years later. 🇭🇹 #InternationalWomensDay #WomensHistoryMonth #BlackHistory #FreedomFighters #Haiti #HaitianRevolution #SaniteBelair
