Rehearsals for the São João festival in Maranhão. Cacuriá is a typical dance from São Luís, created by Seu Lauro in the 70s to liven up the Divino festivities. Pairs dance, sensually swaying their hips to the Divino drummers' (caixeiras) beat. It’s beautiful to watch and also to join in.
Reminder- There are more Brazilians of African ancestry than in all the USA and Caribbean combined!

Festas Juninas are traditional Brazilian festivities that take place in other countries as well, from June 12th until June 29th.
The parties happen all over the country, in the region where I live many people come to participate.
Forró is the traditional music, but nowadays there are other styles. The instruments that the band is playing here are known as:
