Sara: *wary* Dad?
Tom: *rushed* Phillip’s found an emergency. I’m headed out.
Sara: *quickly* Alright, love you - take care and don’t die.
Tom: *distracted* I will.
Sara: Dad!!

Sara Fuller is Tom's thirteen-year-old daughter. A sweet girl, she worries about her dad and is a bit shy around strangers. Sara is a connoisseur of fashion and has picked up on her father and grandfather's tinkering skills. She prefers living with her dad; her relationship with her mother, Pearl Sampson, is strained. Pearl's short fuse and inconsistent parenting style leaves Sara unsettled, confused, and anxious to please. Her father is calm and consistent, if just a little tired and distracted.
Though she has gamely adjusted to a lower-income lifestyle living with her dad, the move to Belleview comes with other difficulties as well. Sara has never met her grandfather - Tom’s father - in person, and now that she has moved to the same town she has some anxieties about the meeting:
“January 5, 1909
...I don’t know if he’s going to be friendly, or what to say when I meet him. Grandmother and Grandfather Sampson are easy, because when they visit we always have a formal dinner and everyone talks about the same things, and they just ask what I’m learning and stuff and then give me clothes money. But Grandpa Whitley works for a living and I don’t think he does fancy dinners and things. He used to write letters sometimes, but Dad always helped me write back. I can’t do that when he’s talking to me in person!”
(Grandpa Whitley’s dog, though, will be warmly greeted.)
