“I have an idea...” Martha May said slowly, twirling a curl around a finger with elegant pensiveness. 

Cindy Lou tilted her head in innocent curiosity. The Grinch echoed her with far less innocence, and Martha hastened to explain. “I mean, it is an idea, but it isn’t necessarily a nice one. I mean, it isn’t illegal, but it would be terribly unkind to Augustus.”

“I love it,” the Grinch declared with unbridled fervor. 

Cindy gave him a reproachful look and turned back to Martha May. “What are you thinking, Ms. Whovier?” 

“Martha, pet, please,” Martha May chided with a gentle smile, before dropping back into a thoughtful frown. “I...I may be thinking about running for Mayor.”

To her relief, neither one howled in horror or dropped dead from shock. Instead, little Cindy’s eyes widened in awe, and Grinch’s face split in a grin of malicious glee. “You’ll destroy him.”

Martha May elected to ignore that and instead paced to and fro, twirling her hair all the more as her thoughts increased. “I mean, yes, I only came to Whoville when I was child, so I haven’t been a life long inhabitant here, but everything else - I’m a respected citizen--”

“Everyone likes you,” Cindy Lou affirmed, nodding her head, her braids flouncing. 

“I come from a good family, and I happen to know all the ins and outs of this city’s protocol and politics, its awards and ceremonies and traditions--”

“You have a Grade A Trophy Husband to go with you to all of them no matter how stupid they are,” Grinch added smugly. 

“I mean, I truly do think I can make a go of it!” Martha May turned to them, biting her lip. “Am I mad?” 

“No, I am,” Grinch retorted. “You’re brilliant. And you’re gonna trounce him, and he’s gonna cry, and we’re gonna take pictures of it.” 

“We’ll consider that a delightful bonus,” Martha May conceded.
