I really wanted to like How To Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying because it sounded like a fun and silly premise (girl sick of failing to win at her isakai setup decides to become the bad guy instead) but wow was it a reminder that if you want to write comedy you have to actually be funny and write characters with a personality and not just go for the obvious sarcasm aside every time and also that putting it in a footnote does not automatically make a joke better. Stopped like 20% in because it felt like a slog. Also it really annoyed me right at the beginning because the protagonist was like yeah idk when and where I'm even from anymore and it doesn't matter as an obvious attempt by the author to avoid having to put any specifically timed references in (fair enough ig) but then the narration was so obviously 2020s American I was like well what was the point.
