Aaaaand (after a small delay) the fourth and final bonus Sketch-a-Wish from my 2nd Patreon anniversary - a frequently requested scene from Uprooted, featuring Sarkan (the Dragon) and Agnieszka! Phew, I'm art-pooped after this one. 🫠
Another parallel between Grishaverse and Uprooted: the Darkling should've yelled more instead of being so patient.
Alina doesn't want to train, whines endlessly, neglects her responsibilities, screws over people because of her incapabilities in front of the royal family, blindly believes in monarchy despite their many failures? Reminds me of Agnieszka from Uprooted. And what did the Dragon do when Agnieszka acted stupidly? He yelled at her, berated her, lectured her, etc. Pointed out her flaws harshly instead of being encouraging and smiling at whining arrogant complaints like the Darkling did with Alina.
Alina, unfortunately, had grown up in an environment where she was beaten for misbehaving. I feel bad for her and beating obviously is not a good solution, (even though that's what any normal general would've done in an army to a soldier for insubordination), but the Darkling was too soft on Alina and he let her dictate the pace of her learning instead of commanding her to pick up the pace. Alina was lounging about and gossiping with new friends and reading what she deemed was necessary, instead of actual training. She never seemed to care about the ongoing genocide and more children getting orphaned because she was too busy feeling sorry for herself because she was also an orphan and not as pretty as Zoya. At least Agnieszka tried to learn, to her credit.
Case in point, Baghra beat, belittled and insulted Alina and called her stupid and she believed Baghra's nonsense exposes with no evidence.
Alina needed a firm hand. Once again, not beating. But since she clearly didn't keep in mind patient explanations of how Grisha had been politely asking to stop being murdered for centuries and it didn't work, she needed to be yelled at until some sense was knocked into her head and her prejudiced views against Grisha were flushed out. The Darkling explains to her how the world works a hundred times and she simply shakes her head and "doesn't let herself think about it." Then she fucks off to an orphanage and is happy to be lobotomized so she won't see how Ravka goes into decline, gets bankrupted, gets attacked and collapses within the next couple of years, while the Darkling was managing to protect the borders and keep things running with much more limited power than Nikolai for hundreds of years.
I'm so sorry to everyone I've ever made fun of for being into those 100year old Fae+17 year old girl love stories because I just read Uprooted and you know what. you know what. yeah. Yeaaaaaah.
Sarkan to Solya
i might not be the biggest sarkan fan but if i spent YEARS studying and practicing for a test and some random chick who started preparing the night before scored the same as me, i too would be peeved as fuck!
Sarkan: “They’ll most likely attack at the first light of morning. The best thing you can do at the moment is get some sleep.” Agnieszka: *I'm gonna fuck the old man*
