The Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation (STF) says it has reached an impasse with the government-school board bargaining team and will once again begin work-to-rule on Monday. The work-to-rule will continue indefinitely, STF said in a news release. The two sides met Wednesday in an attempt to advance negotiations on a new collective agreement. The STF said Wednesday evening that the Government-Trustee Bargaining Committee refused to consider anything other than binding arbitration. "Teachers are engaged and are committed to reaching a negotiated deal that will ensure students' needs can be met," STF President Samantha Becotte said. "Government's singular focus and insistence on binding arbitration shows that it is unwilling to adequately address the urgent needs of Saskatchewan students," she said.

The third of a series of rallies organized by the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation (STF) was held outside the office of Saskatchewan Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety, Paul Merriman. After contract negotiations with the provincial government hit an impasse earlier this week, 90 per cent of teachers in the province voted on possible sanctions, which ultimately passed with 95 per cent approval.

Province says legislation lets families educate kids per their ‘conscientious beliefs’

Amid Pride celebrations across Saskatchewan, experts are raising concern over the provincial government's decision to boost funding for certain independent schools that are operated by churches with anti-LGBTQ policies.

Last month, the province formally announced the 21 independent and four "historical" schools in Saskatchewan that will receive $17.5 million in operating grants for the 2022-23 school year. Per the latest provincial budget, that includes $2.6 million toward a new "certified independent school" category. The province says the schools that will fall under the new category are still to be determined.

In a letter to the minister, Hinz pointed to those statistics and to Westgate Heights Academy in Saskatoon, which — according to the school's website — is run by Westgate Alliance Church.

That church's discipline and restoration policy reads that "homosexuality" is in "violation of scriptural moral standards" and is equivalent to crimes such as fraud and sexual assault.

New Democrats and Sask. Party sit 9 percentage points apart in voter approval, according to poll

A new online survey suggests Saskatchewan's Opposition New Democrats have significantly narrowed the gap between themselves and the governing Saskatchewan Party for the first time in nearly five years.

According to results of an Angus Reid Institute poll released Thursday, the NDP had a 39 per cent approval rating among decided voters polled, compared to the Sask. Party's 48 per cent.

That gap has narrowed since an October Angus Reid poll, which found 35 per cent support for the NDP and 52 per cent for the Sask. Party.

Pollsters list Premier Scott Moe's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as one of the main reasons why fewer than half of decided voters said they would cast their ballot for the Sask. Party if an election was called today.

A COVID-19 outbreak at a Saskatoon long-term care home has killed eight residents and infected nearly 50 people.

The outbreak and the ongoing cases associated with it don’t appear on a government list of COVID-19 cases in long-term and personal care homes in Saskatchewan.

The daughter of one deceased resident wants to know why.

“It’s not mentioned. It’s like it doesn’t matter. It’s like they don’t count,” Francise Dobmeier said. “That’s how I feel right now.”

Dobmeier’s mother was a resident of Saskatoon Convalescent Home. She died on Jan. 20 after testing positive for COVID-19.
