Sathamel (original name Sheol) Review of the Winterfylleth, Samethmel and Blasphemer gig In january. This band was the one I was most looking forward to interviewing, having previously seen them at three different events. The first one was at one of my personal favourite festivals, that also happens to be in the UK:  Blackwood Gathering, in the Lake District. (This was before Sathamel changed guitarists)

 Blackwood is one of my favourite festivals in Britain, combining the beauty of nature with the raw and unique talents of some of the best Blackened Metal bands Europe/Britain has to offer!

 The second time I saw them was at Burning Manc festival at Sound Control, Manchester. Again, another intimate gig in the basement. Everything was different with both events compared to the this one; lighting, atmosphere and even people. I already knew they were going to be good, better still that there was only 3 bands at this gig which meant I could concentrate on each band fully.

Each band member has joined the band at different times and have their unique influences, styles and passion for the music, which paved the way to the music you hear today.

The band members are as follows: Valdr – Drums, original member KVN – Guitars, original member Kruk – Vocals, original member Deimos – Bass, new meat since 2014 Aksahl – Guitar, original band Forneus (and still playing), new meat since 2016

I was very interested to find out what their song influences were, so I asked the band members in this in the interview. This is what the vocalist Kruk had to say: “The songs are strongly influenced by mythology and Satanism, however none of us belongs to any dogma. The lyrics are based on events that have happened to us in personal lives or in our career.

The mythology is a very good tool to provide atmosphere to the songs as well as possible alternative interpretations which is important on artistic level.”

 To which I replied:

“personal influence is where art is made” (as a music lover, artist and writer I truly believe that.)

Which is another reason why this band was a joy to talk to and better still to listen to, as you could really see the passion and dedication they have for their music. As you will see with the following question, I asked: “What are the biggest influences on the band and how did you come together?”

  KVN replied: “The music is created by the band as a collective. We write and bounce our ideas using the internet, sending back and forth "skeleton" riffs and structures. I will then transcribe the songs and send them to Valdr who will then add drum parts and "cast" the overall structure. Bass lines are left to Deimos to produce. Then the song and structure is developed and demos created, with extra embellishments coming from both guitar players usually at my home or recorded live in the rehearsal space. We then refine it in the studio, changing parts as we see fit and continue to experiment. Kruk writes and arranges his own vocals” As for artist influences it was the bassist who filled me in on who he thought they sound similar to and having listening to the band a fair few times I agree, this what he said: “The biggest influences are bands like Behemoth, Belphegor, Watain and Dissection and few others, however we try our best to keep our sound unique and different” Just when I thought I had a good understanding of this band the drummer said this: “I think we all have different influences from many different genres within and outside metal. Personally, I come from a punk rock background but we do have bands that we all agree that influence the most, definitely the more extreme bands as far as music and visuals are concerned.” I was intrigued by their response and wanted to know something from the newest member of this group but by no means the least talented. So, I asked him how he thought he contributed to the band and the influences he brought with him. The guitarist replied:

 “Being a fan since I first played with them roughly 2/3 years ago, I was really drawn into their style, music and image, listening to them regularly. I was tasked to learn their song I started to subtly put my own little tweaks in without varying to far away from the song itself.

My roots in playing guitar come from Technical Death Metal, Decapitated and Meshuggah being two of my favourite bands. Learning something new from whoever I’m playing guitar with has shaped me in one way or another. I hope to continue to bring my style and influence to this band. I hope you check out our new album as it sounds vicious.”

(may use that word from now on, sorry it has been stolen)

And there you have it, my first proper interview with a band I feel deserves to go as high as they possible can. And two other bands that are simply fantastic whom I hope to watch again and get more of an understanding of their music and influences.

The only negative points when watching them is that I’m not really a fan of green and there was abundance of green light on stage (now I know that they usually have red which honestly would have been better mood lighting for them) And if they can could more personality of their characters into their live shop perhaps it might be better but again that’s just me, other than that nothing to really complain about. Oh, and more music pppplllleeeaaassseee!!! Thank you.
