SATH
SATH IT IS SO GOOD
I mean, it offers ten majillion fannish hooks in all kinds of directions, but, I submit: it is first and foremost really, really well made, super smart, and hugely satisfying. Everything about it is so well done – the writing! the acting! the direction! the cinematography! the costumes! There’s an exclamation mark for every single one of those because every single one of them is right up there with the best I’ve ever seen. The story is both character-driven, by some beautifully drawn characters, and action-packed; it has a lot to say about justice, ethics, and good government, and it also has a hell of a lot to say about identity porn.
(If I had to summarize NiF in a snarky nutshell it would be identity porn for great justice.)
Why you, my friend Sath, might really like NiF:
- smart, flawed people being smart and flawed, the show
- there are a lot of very different powerful women, all treated seriously (though the MCs are male)
- brilliant writing the end
- the protagonist has some really interesting moral shadows around his edges, and they’re not always the ones he thinks they are
- there’s a very nice ship with the protag and the second lead (it’s the juggernaut, and full disclosure, I actually don’t really ship it? inconvenient id is inconvenient, but there is a lot of exquisitely filmed fodder there at the heart of the identity porn and it strikes me it might be up your alley)
A caveat, though: sadly, what is NOT up there with the best I’ve ever seen are special effects, i.e., CGI, which the first episode is sadly and unrepresentatively full of. Also, the first episode drops you in the middle of several plot lines at once, some of them in media res, which can be a little overwhelming; I found it rapidly improves, but, eh, don’t judge it by ep 1.

11: What kind of relationships are you most interested in writing?
Bad ones! In all seriousness the answer is probably relationships with some form of built in power imbalance, and how the party with less structural power negotiates against that and pushes back. I do write about some straightforward and more-or-less equal relationships (just in my recent work, Seward and Quincey in Bitter Waters are pretty much on an even footing, or Richard II and Anne of Bohemia in my Histories fic) but I would say that weird explorations of inequality are more representative of my output.
12: For E-rated fic, what are some things your characters keep doing?
They keep talking about their partners' big big hands, hands so big, broad hands, big fingers, yeah baby. Also they keep thinking about other people than their current sex partner during sex. Orgasms get really vague perfunctory descriptions (as does penetration) but sex fluids get described as saline, or oceanic, or uh... oyster-like. People are sweaty. Somebody sucks a bite.

EVERYONE WOULD BE DEAD
Joke. He would be the person who just got inexplicably ushered to the front of the non eu passports line after having gotten caught cutting his way into the eu passports line. Yet he’s been a wei citizen for longer than wei existed?
⭐!
I‘m going to do “and your feet will follow” because recently I got reminded how much I genuinely loved to write it, especially the parts involving the backstory.
It is, after all, a story about two cranky ballerinas finding each other again, and I think it is the fic where I discovered I really like atmospheric writing. It doesn’t seem like this should be a story that contains a lot of autobiographical things, but it definitely does— my favorite bit didn’t make it into the story because I found no natural way to explain it, but Lilia and Yakov married young to get an apartment assigned to them. I‘m actually not sure if this makes as much sense in the time period they must have married (the 1970s) since I smudged so much of the timeline. In many Soviet states, housing was allocated to people in need (and so you could get by on the very little payment for say, athletes starting their career.) The apartments were usually pretty crappy, crowded and grey—but the ones for married couples were much nicer! Especially because they had space for children--and they were not much more expensive than rent for one single person, since it banked on young couples having lots of sex and then eventually having kids.
And then, obviously, married couples, especially married couples were one partner was currently in the Soviet Union, were much less of a flight risk in regards to defection. If they were married before their international performances, it could have been a reason for them to perform in front of international audiences, instead of someone unmarried. It probably would have done both their careers a lot of good.
So they married young, and then later found out that they were incompatible or discovered that sex with other people was fun, too, and Lilia started her affair with her young understudy because Yakov was having fun with all these pretty women and she wanted to have fun too.
(And Minako was very eager to show her appreciation.)
This only made it into the actual text in snippets and subtext, but that’s basically what happened thirty years before the story. I couldn’t find a good opportunity to insert Yakov in a way that didn’t seem biased towards Lilia who is the POV through most of it, and I wanted their breakup to be mutual.
(They divorced when Victor took public credit for his first choreography, which Lilia couldn’t abide, and Yakov thought that her original design was not made for the best technical fluidity. Victor was too much of a little shithead to realise crediting your teachers was still standard procedure.) There might’ve been money involved, too. Lilia settled outside of court with the transference of Yakov’s most beloved property, an apartment gifted by a Russian oligarch in the Seven Sisters.
Don’t be fooled by me talking so much about marriage and property rights, though! This is basically a reunion between the lovers Lilia and Minako, and how they might fall in together again 💖
(There’s also a lot of ballet knowledge I don’t want to talk about because most of it was appropriated from the dancer I was dating just before that time.)
1!
i really wanted somebody to tell me a story about a hockey player turning into a cat sometimes, and none of my friends thought that was as hilarious as i did, so i was like FINE, I’LL WRITE IT MY DAMN SELF. the rest... is history?????
