a bit late for the ask game but. 0. probably somewhere in the negatives really
Yeah that sounds about right
The kids arrived home from school to find Nanni watching TV with Anika. Their grandmother would visit on her days off from work to help out.
“Satvik, will you come and help me get some groceries please?”
“Yes Mama, I’ll get changed.”
Ananya would often take just one of the kids with her to the grocery store. They would have one on one time together and she would treat them to a milkshake or ice-cream. The kids loved having their mother to themselves for that short time.
After the groceries were packed in the car Ananya and Satvik ordered ice cream and sat outside the cute Ice Cream Shoppe. They chatted amicably for a while, eating and enjoying the warm autumn weather, Ananya allowing Satvik to steer the conversation.
When he finally ran out of steam she spoke.
“Satvik, I have noticed there seems to be some tension between you and Aryan.” It was merely an observation, she wanted to be careful in her approach. Listen if he wanted to talk.
Satvik looked at his ice cream. “Yes.” It was a statement of fact. His eyes moved to his mother, his expression sad. “Something happened.”
Ananya waited expectantly.
He shook his head downcast. “But I can’t tell you Mama.”
Ananya looked at her son feeling grieved. “Okay,” she said. She wouldn’t force it, no matter how much she might want to. She would have to try to let this go.
They both finished their ice cream and a lady came to take their bowls.
“I feel…disappointed, Mama.” It was a word he had heard his parents use. Ananya looked at Satvik, her eyes questioning. “Aryan made a choice.” He looked at her, his eyes clear. “And I didn’t like it.”
Ananya could see the struggle in Satvik but also that he was growing up. He had obviously thought about this deeply and she felt she may understand better now. She didn’t need the details.
“I see.” She said. “Sometimes our loved ones do things that we don’t agree with or they let us down in some way and it changes the way we see them.” She offered.
He nodded. “Yes.” That’s what had happened. And now Aryan didn’t want Satvik to talk about it. “What do I do?”
Ananya felt for her son. “Nothing, shona.” The term of endearment was sweet like its Bengali meaning.
He looked at her, his eyes wide. He had been expecting and hoping his mother would help him with her usual wise advice. Not tell him there was nothing he could do.
