off the top of my head: the dalish use hair ornamentation as a quick run-down of a clan member’s romantic availability and their social hierarchy within the clan itself. there’s braidwork to signify how and to whom someone is bonded; hair cut short (the way merrill’s is) essentially signifies someone in exile or in mourning and works out to Dead Dove Do Not Eat; long hair left loose on someone who’d previous been bonded/kept their hair braided back is a good a sign as any that that bonding is over. generally i headcanon that it’s pretty taboo to leave hair loose at all; it comes out of the arlathvhens, and needing a really fast way to find out if the cute person across the bonfire is DTF or if you’re gonna get smacked for even asking, you know? you don’t wanna hit on some hunter’s SO and get stabbed for it, so... braids
