i headcanon that Diana's hallucination of Gabe is actually heavily based off (or hell, just IS) her memories of Dan when they were younger-- reckless, a fire cracker, and so SO loyal to and loving toward her. that's why there are moments when Gabe takes on the role of a lover than a son (i.e. the orig broadway staging of I Am The One or even just in the lyrics of I Dreamed a Dance). because Diana is imagining both a son who grew up and took after the man she loves AND who the man she loves used to be, the one she originally fell in love with and not this tired, in denial man who's so bogged down with their problems.

((this head canon also adds a lil bit more depth to the I Am The One reprise (and that bit in I've Been where he and Gabe harmonize their riffs), because not only is Dan confronted by the spectre of his son and his own grief, but by the spectre of who he used to be and the love he had for Diana))
