Always thinking about how The Magnus Archives de-glorifys martyrdom.
Magnus Archives fans, if you get this post to 1,500 notes I'll draw Elias Bouchard tied up.
[Edit: Final drawing-> here! ]
The Thing about TMA, truly, that so many seem to forget. Is that EVERY CHARACTER IS A BAD PERSON IN SOME WAY.
Sasha hides her true self and puts up fronts, knowing everything about you without giving much back turning focus off herself and back to you with ease in a very Spiral Way.
Tim puts on different faces and personalities to fit what others want from him/he wants from others, never showing his true self in a very Stranger Way.
Martin puts on a happy front and plays to everyone's desires and tries to just blend in with the backdrop, never being known so he can never be disliked in a very Lonely Way.
Jon keeps his cards close to his chest, telling blatant untruths and giving different answers when asked personal questions, keeping himself to himself because he can't be Known in a very Watcher Way.
"I don’t know how to describe it. It was like an impressionist painting of a dancer, all colours and shapes that made you feel movement you couldn’t see. Silently, imperceptibly, moving from one position to another. The music had stopped and the dance was silent. It was beautiful."
I think about "Speaking of not cool, have you seen Martin?" at least once a day. Entirely uncalled for but such an iconic Basira line.
Thinking about Agnes Montague, Gerard Keay and Jonathan Sims. All chosen ones, in their own way. All intended by those who decided they were a chosen one to bring on the end of days. Or die trying. Or die while succeeding. They were only as valuable as their potential. Only worth what they could give.
And death was their only escape from those expectations.
Agnes had her church hang her.
Gerry died and then had Jon burn his page.
Jon had Martin kill him.
I just think there's something about them. Something about them all being doomed in such similar ways.
Me in my friends dms as soon as I finish TMA:
