Selfish of Selfless?  That is the Question

A few days ago I read a post on Facebook that said "I hope Donald Trump is a good President.  Wanting him to fail is like wanting the pilot to crash the plane that we are ALL on."  This statement is part of the problem.

Everyone has a different definition of a Donald Trump failure.  Where you might find some of his actions an accomplishment, I might find them as a failure.  You telling me to stop whining about it is not going to change my opinion.

I find it interesting that the whole "them against us" sentiment that has become the prominent background of this election, is forming around two very different ideals.  The Trump supporters seem to be focused on what he can do for them to personally prosper.  Looking at your personal agenda versus a global agenda is selfish.  The Trump detractors, otherwise called liberals, are focused on larger ideals such as the future of our environment, the right of a women's choice, and the long term impact of deregulation on our economy.  Looking at a global or long term agenda is selfless.  Don't get me wrong, I understand and desire the need to prosper.  What I don't understand or desire is to do so at the expense of others.

So keeping in mind that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I am using my right to free speech to say I do want Donald Trump, or at least his policies to fail.  There is no shame in wanting these failures and it is not the same as saying I want to destroy the United States of America as the crashing the plane quote implies.

I do not want my LBGT friends and family to lose their equal rights that have been fought hard for.  Their equal rights as human beings never should have been a fight to begin with and they should not have to fight to hang on to them.  If marriage and equality rights are revoked for the LBGT community this in my opinion will be a Donald Trump failure!  He will have failed a significant portion of our population.  As POTUS you are supposed to represent ALL of the people, not a select portion.

We are all descendants of immigrants.  They are the foundation of our nation. Unless you are a 100% full blood Native American you are here because of immigrants.  Immigrants came here looking for a better life.  Freedom of religious choice.  Separation of church and state.  An opportunity for freedom and to forge their own way and future.  Yet on inauguration day I watched a Trump supporter in Washington, DC say she couldn't wait for the promised wall so she could feel safe.  Seriously?  You fear our neighbors that much?  Should we build walls all the way around the US to make sure no one can come here ever?  Is that the only way you will feel safe?  I really don't understand the fear.  How is wanting a better life for themselves and their families bad?  Is this not how you came to be here?  One of your ancestors wanted something better?  If anything their desire to come here is a testament to how great America already is.  The "Wall" being built in my opinion would be a Trump failure and a snub to our nations history.

The EPA may become a memory if indicators and promises made by Trump pan out.  The environment is important and ignoring science because of cost is just selfish.  You might as well tell your children, grandchildren and great grand children that you don't love and care about them.  Ignoring the environment because it will put more money in your pocket is a failure to our future generations.  If the EPA stops existing or becomes so disempowered that it is ineffective will be a Donald Trump Failure in my eyes.

Deregulation of industry leads to the glass bottom that always breaks under pressure.  What do you think led to the housing market fall in 2008?  The recession that followed?  It was the deregulation of banks, Wall Street and lending practices.  Many of the same people that lost jobs and homes during the last recession are the same people who voted for and think that Trump is going to line their pockets in gold.  He just might.  It will be fools gold that will disappear as soon as the glass breaks.  Deregulation might be an accomplishment to the rich who will just get richer, but it will be a failure to most when the lose everything once again.

Last but not least women's rights.  You believe that abortion is wrong and should be abolished.  The funny part of this is I agree that abortion as birth control is wrong, but where we differ is in our belief that our government has a right to control a women's body and choice.  Why should the predominately boys club in Washington, DC have the right to dictate what a women does with her body?  The government should not have any right to dictate this kind of decision to a women.  Period.  If abortion is wrong and God is real, leave it to him to pass judgement as the Bible says you should.

Leave Planned Parenthood (PP) alone!  Many women rely on PP for basic health services such as PAP smears and mammograms. Sense affordable health care is also at risk, PP will be the one of the fee options left for a significant percentage of women in this country to receive basic women's health services.  Contrary to many popular beliefs man does not rule woman.  We are meant to be partners in this adventure called life.  Neither one could succeed without the other.  If women's rights and or Planned Parenthood are lost or significantly changed I will see this as a failure by Trump.

So as the saying goes one man's trash is another mans treasure.  So while I might come to see Trump's presidency as a failure, it does not mean I am wishing for it.  All I am wishing for is the failure of policies that are good for the few and not for the masses.  I don't want our country to fail but the only way I will ever see a Trump presidency as a success is if his stated policies and objectives fail and we are able to stay on a course for a better, brighter future for ALL Americans on this plane.
