Splashy, orange, big. This is a get out your cell phone and take my picture sort of bee. Eucera fulvohirta is its scientific name and my name for it is Fuzzy Orange Big Bee (clever, no?). Anyway no one would pass up taking this bee's picture yet there is nary a one on iNaturalist nor Bugguide and Discoverlife shows only 3 actual collection records (1 by Ted Mitchell from the 20s and 2 from the 60's). So, safe to say, this bee is rare. Why is it rare? Mitchell says it has been found on Eleagnus and Vicia...not much to go on other than they are dangly long corolla Eucera type of plants. So, we must mount an expedition just like days of old and hunt the rare Fuzzy Orange Big Bee and study it all up. This is the only recent record I know of (but there must be others) collected by Sabrie Breland in the flatlands of South Georgia. Photo by Sara Guerrieri. Surely a donor exists who would sponsor a grad student to prevent the Fuzzy Orange Big Bee from disappearing?
The spring dandelions are an essential source of food for the bees. Protect them. 💚

Tonight has been stupid. And by stupid I mean totally expected with my kind of luck. You should know that right now I'm lying in bed in the quarantine room cuddling Libbee because something is wrong with her. By something I mean that the bee expert I have been taking advice from @christinelebean thinks she has chronic bee paralysis virus which is apparently a thing. As you can see in the video Libbee is wobbly and not all of her legs seem to be in her control. Plus, when she tries to take off she basically just drops like a rock. So anyway, this is like the third time Libbee has had an episode like this but all the previous ones I came up with a way to blame myself for doing something wrong and with some hand feeding Libbee came through and got back to normal. This time is worse though and she even flopped herself into her tiny water dish which is why I have a bee in bed in the quarantine room warming up and drying off. I didn't even know bees could be special needs. Like seriously, how ridiculous is my life? #bee #carpenterbee #sanctuary #rescue #savethebee #beeinmybed #cuddlingabee #wtf https://www.instagram.com/p/ByZKNqansjo/?igshid=833zdehj3x4i

BEES! HELP THEM!
(image not mine)
Alright fuckers you already know what this is about. we should all know how important the common bee is as well as other insects, we also know that they’re dying at an alarming rate.
Ways to help these little guys:
leave a little dish of water around your garden or if you live in an apartment without a garden, sit on you window still if you can or on your balcony If you have one. don't make the water too deep and also put some stones or sticks in the dish for the bees to rest on. DONT PUT SUGAR IN THE WATER. sugar has empty carbohydrates which are no good for are bee friends. heres a link that goes more in depth about why sugar water is bad for bees. https://www.thelittlehoneybeecompany.com/blog/read_185365/why-leaving-sugar-water-out-for-bees-is-such-a-bad-idea.html
PLANTS YO. We know how these little guys love plants, they don't just have to be flowers either, although, if you are planting plants in the ground native will usually do best, otherwise make sure to check the weather conditions the plants can grow in.
You can build a Mason Bee House! its just a little house for bees, you can buys them, I have seen them in stores, but if you can’t find any, here’s a link on how to build one. https://blog.freepeople.com/2016/04/honeybees-build-bee-house/?cm_mmc=Pinterest-_-Q12016-_-160411_bloghelpingthehoneybees-_-1&crlt.pid=camp.Gb635b4a4tSF
DONT USE PESTICIDES! IT HURTS THE BEES ASWELL AS OTHER INSECTS. here's some alternatives that are safe for the bees. https://gardencollage.com/wander/gardens-parks/home-gardeners-guide-safe-bee-friendly-pesticides/
If you have a bee invasion, DONT call and exterminator, call a beekeeper, they know how to safely relocate the bees.
