Time to Bake!
So I recently ordered a baking bundle from Net Zero Company, and I decided to give the silicone baking mats a try today. Since my family bakes pretty often, this seemed like a worthwhile investment. For reference, here’s everything in the bundle (I’ll be testing it all out eventually, promise):
Just for reference, I ordered this on a Wednesday and it showed up on Friday, so the shipping turnaround was pretty dang impressive. The bag it was shipped in was also compostable, and it came with a little card that can be grown into spearmint, so I currently have a positive outlook on the company. Anyway, onto the cookies.
I decided to make peanut butter cookies, which call for greased cookie sheets. For this, I instead used two sheets that were covered with the silicone and one that was covered with nonstick cooking spray. Here’s how the sheets looked once on the cookie sheets:
It covered most of the pan, but there was still a bit of metal that was left uncovered, which allowed less space for cookies. Ultimately, I was able to fit three rows on dough on the silicone sheets versus four rows on the greased sheet, but that wasn’t too big of a deal. Note that I used airbake cookie sheets, and a smaller tray might be able to fit the silicone better.
The actual baking process went over well, the cookies came off the silicone easily without so much as leaving a crumb behind. The cookies are uniformly baked and look no different than the ones baked without the silicone mats. If anything, the silicone made cleanup a heck of a lot easier, since the mat can be tossed in the dishwasher as opposed to needing to wash the big cookie sheet by hand. Also, the cookies didn’t take on any silicone taste to them, which was fantastic. Here are my lovely cookies (ignore the broken one, it fell off my spatula prematurely):
While this might not have been the *perfect* cookie to try these out with, I still liked how the silicone preformed. The mats are more so aimed toward replacing parchment paper, foil, or waxed paper, and my family really only used parchment for one cookie type that I don’t have the resources to make right now. Might have to do another trial with these when the time comes to make those cookies, so stay tuned if you’re interested in those results.
While these mats are fantastic for baking (and are heat-safe up to 428 degrees Fahrenheit / 220 degrees Celsius), they could also be used for rolling out dough to keep counters clean, putting underneath a grater to catch what’s being grated, or for roasting vegetables (the site they’re from is much more creative with usage ideas than me, I promise). That being said, here are my pros and cons:
Pros: save on cleanup time, easy to use, no nonstick spray necessary, no silicone taste after use, multifunctional, infinitely reusable
Cons: don’t completely cover larger cookie sheets, less useful if you don’t use parchment paper often
(If I think of more, I’ll edit this later)
If you’re interested, or know a baking fiend who also likes saving the planet, these silicone baking mats might be something to look into. Another Christmas commission heading out to a client down in #Florida ! I’m so on love with this #SeaTurtle and #StingRay #oilpainting I am tempted to keep it for myself! 🤗 12x24 on deep gallery canvas, with the artwork continuing around the edges. The Rippling Cries
The turtles now
wear plastic rings
In spills of oil,
the birds soak their wings
The corals and their reefs
Are now nothing but bleach't
Plastic bottles and covers
Are filling their appetit'
Their cries are now just echos
Bouncing off the waves
They feel its getting better
But dying, now just takes days
Moonlit HLs
Please we have to start fixing this. I need us to start fixing this. I’m Gen Z, I could possibly never even see my 30’s if this happens. Please we need to fix this.
