What Is Plastic Pollution in the Ocean and Why It’s a Global Crisis
Plastic pollution in the ocean refers to the buildup of plastic waste—like bottles, bags, and microplastics—that ends up in our seas and oceans. It threatens marine life, damages ecosystems, and disrupts the natural balance underwater. Plastic pollution in the ocean has now become a global crisis, affecting over 700 marine species through ingestion or entanglement. It also poses risks to human health and the global food chain. The long life of plastic waste makes it even more harmful. Tackling this issue requires urgent global action, better waste management, and reduced reliance on single-use plastics. By addressing plastic pollution in the ocean, we protect biodiversity and ensure a cleaner, safer planet for future generations.
New Release: Marine Debris Resource Collection
Marine debris threatens the ocean and its resources, the economy, and safe navigation. Animals like birds, turtles, marine mammals, and other creatures can die when they accidentally swallow or get tangled up in marine debris.
All national marine sanctuaries face the challenges of marine debris and the harmful impacts that come along with managing this problem. The Marine Debris Resource Collection features resources related to the problem of marine debris, NOAA and sanctuary system programs, and the solution to pollution.

Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year for use in a wide variety of applications.
At least 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, and make up 80% of all marine debris from surface waters to deep-sea sediments.
Marine species ingest or are entangled by plastic debris, which causes severe injuries and deaths.
Plastic pollution threatens food safety and quality, human health, coastal tourism, and contributes to climate change.
There is an urgent need to explore the use of existing legally binding international agreements to address marine plastic pollution.
Recycling and reuse of plastic products, and support for research and innovation to develop new products to replace single-use plastics are also necessary to prevent and reduce plastic pollution.

The Rippling Cries
The turtles now
wear plastic rings
In spills of oil,
the birds soak their wings
The corals and their reefs
Are now nothing but bleach't
Plastic bottles and covers
Are filling their appetit'
Their cries are now just echos
Bouncing off the waves
They feel its getting better
But dying, now just takes days

I created some small lino prints for the pathway project “Then and now”. I was researching ways to protect the earth from the climate crisis for another project I had in mind. I then stumbled upon an article saying that raising awareness is very important in the fight for change. I then created these small, simple posters in response to that.
I chose to raise awareness for ocean pollution, and decided to create a poster for the “Protect the oceans” petition (Greenpeace). As Greenpeace puts it, “From climate change to plastics, to deep sea mining and overfishing- the threats facing our world’s oceans are growing bigger and more urgent by day... Our oceans sustain all life on Earth-now they need us to protect them”
