Franchise Retrospective: Saw Jigsaw After 7 years Jigsaw finally makes his return and after all that time it wasn't really worth the wait. This film kinda goes out of its way to make itself seem different from the previous films but they just gave us the same formula without all the characters we'd been following the entire time. It sticks out like a sore thumb compared with the rest of the franchise. For better or worse the first 7 films had a lot of consistent characters and storylines that played out through multiple films, it all felt very much tied together. This film feels distant. I understand the need to try to separate itself but they could have done a better job of taking the film in a different direction. It doesn't really have the balls to really try anything actually different. They just do away with the hyper-editing and change the color palette. The traps have a different look (and there actually is a storyline reason why) but ultimately it's more of the same. Spoiler alert!!!!!!! The twist itself is something repeated also when you think about it. At first it seems kinda cool, its a not only a sequel but also a prequel! And then there's another protege. Yes. That's now 3 shifts in time and 4 protege twists in this franchise. Really. Yep. More of the same. And it's a damn shame cuz after 7 left us with Dr Lawrence and his army of Jigsaw cultists (ok there were only like 2 shown but dammit imma call it an army) I thought they had a ton of options to make something different and truly crazy.
