You (canonically) have to have a navigator that can not only make it to the Grand Line in the first place (which involves making your ship literally cross a mountain range), but one that can then navigate you to the correct route of islands (all of which tend to be full of Deadly things)--and it turns out that you not only need the correct route of islands, but you also need the Road Poneglyphs, which requires an archaeologist (which the World Government KILLED all of, with the exception of Nico Robin) or someone else who could somehow read them. And not only would getting the Road Poneglyphs involve finding the correct places where they’re held (Sky Island and Zou, as examples), but most of the Poneglyphs are guarded by, y’know, Yonkou, Shichibukai, the World Government itself will come after you, there are entire islands of people sworn to protect them, etc etc. 

Like how the FUCK is Shanks so powerful??? Oda straight up says he can handle all of that--all of that clusterfuck, the potential of fighting the other three yonkou and all eight shichibukai AND the entire Marine Corps for pissing off the World Government by uncovering the Poneglyphs--WITHIN A YEAR???
