Arne Jacobsen for Georg Jensen
@scandinave: "I'm right here." / accepting.
joseph buquet was dead. she knew that -- he'd been dead for a week or two, told in excruciating detail by more than one corps member. & while it was tragic, of course, she didn't really know the man, & didn't see it. but she has since seen him. she's not had an encounter like this in some time, never straying from the costume shop or her own little living-space. so her delivering la carlotta's costume was different, & she was not eager to do so, but it was an order. she'd seen the late stagehand in the corridors; he'd taken her by the shoulders & yelled, head lolling from his broken neck. (the ghost, demoiselle! the head of death, the lasso! you shall die, we all shall die!) the dress had fallen from her hands, beads breaking & spilling across the floor.
her mind is trapped in that hallway, looking into the eyes of a dead man. but she has found herself in the costume shop again, attempting to repair the dress. her hands shake, the front of her frock smeared with droplets of blood from her pricked fingertips & glasscut hands. christine had found her here, sleepless, working mindlessly. i'm right here, she says. indeed. the seamstress turns to the other, hazel eyes empty & wide. her voice, typically unused, is a hoarse whisper. " -- i ... i s-saw him. jos-seph bu - buquet."
