Hey, has Tumblr gotten ahold of this song yet? I am currently too tired to express how much I love this song on so many levels. Just listen to it. If we’re in any way similar people—queer lovers of classics and the academic aesthetic and folk music and a British accent and vocal harmony and acoustic music with a sometimes crippling anxiety that tends towards obsessive-compulsive behaviors and thoughts, one of which is to project myself as the person I think other people want to see, and a slut for incredible rhyme scene and scansion—this song was probably written for you
goes crazy about michael nesmith and scansion again
How to rewrite Dumbest Girl Alive by 100 Gecs
Dumbest Girl Alive has quite a simple pattern to follow, making it quite easy and fun to rewrite.
(If you're new here, check out the useful notes to better understand this post!)
The entire song is based around the following pattern: / x / x / x /
For example: If you think I'm stupid now
This pattern can also be thought of as three trochees followed by a single stressed syllable.
Every line of the song is three instances of the pattern, followed by the phrase "I'm the dumbest girl alive." The last syllable of the second pattern should rhyme with "alive" (slant is fine, so long as the syllable has an "ai" sound).
The original song deviates from this pattern exactly twice, with the lines "text, text, text, text", which is four stressed syllables, and with the outro, which features a pattern of five syllables then 7 syllables for a line, and it doesn't end with "I'm the dumbest girl alive", though it does still follow the same rhyme pattern.
To prove this works, the following will work in place of (nearly) any line in the song.
Mighty Morphin' Power Pop, Teenage Mutant Ninja Fries TV these days fuckin' sucks, I'm the Dumbest Girl Alive.
I hope that this guide was helpful.
i fuckin love scansion y’all
the all consuming nature of ancient literature is such that i regularly dream about dactylic hexameter 📜🏛️🌾
as someone who knows nothing of poetry, what do the lines and curves mean in the analysis?
On this blog, for English-language poetry,
◡ means an unstressed syllable
– means a stressed syllable
/ means a break between feet (which are minimal repeating units made up of stressed and unstressed syllables, basically)
The best part of talking to other classicists is when one by one you all confess to being scansion nerds
