Scarlet ✅ 2.5/5
This one hurts because I defended this before I’d even seen it for months. Sadly, I knew there was no hope for this film when we started getting random Hawaiian dance numbers and jpop musical performances in the middle of Shibuya crossing. 2 straight misses with this and Belle for Hosoda. I have no idea what he wanted this film to be, but it never came together for me. The last 15 minutes are heartfelt, but I disagree with the entire forgiveness philosophy here. Not just a knock on this film, I also disliked parts of Vinland Saga for that same reason. To me, the story is a wandering mess just like Scarlet is in the desert before meeting Hijiri.
Speaking of Hijiri, I HATE the goody goody two shoes angle of his character and all the pacifism BS here. The Northman, another take on Hamlet, is one of my fave films. Even if you didn’t get half as violent as that film, holy shit some people just can’t be redeemed, it’s ok to kill bad people. I DID like he and Scarlet’s relationship, that was really the only thing this film has going for it along with how gorgeous scarlet is. She deserved a much better script and story, though. Waste of a good character design.
On the topic of character designs, I’ll obviously always prefer 2D, but the 3D CGI here wasn’t as bad as people were making it out to be from the trailers. It actually looks quite good and I liked it. It’s not touching Hosoda’s 2D stuff, but it’s good. The few fights we had actually looked decent. The background art here was stunning too.
TLDR: Alice in borderland mixed with Vinland saga and Hamlet from Temu. Artistically beautiful, but lacking in substance for me. I really hope Hosoda regains that Wolf Children, The Girl Who leapt Through time, etc., energy.
Seated to watch Scarlet finally….. back in spiritual loyalty to middastic king Mamoru Hosoda torment nexus ✊😔
