Macaw numbers worldwide have been plummeting for many years and Costa Rica is no different. Formerly present over 85% of the country, there are now two main isolated populations of scarlet macaws remaining in Costa Rica. While great green macaws have recovered slightly thanks to intensive conservation efforts, their total population is still low. Another Look At A Quieter Group of Wild Macaws At A Clay Lick **************************************** This is a #repost from @rothdigga via @PhotoAroundApp Macaws for days son! Here's what a clay lick looks like in the amazon from Peru in 2012. Parrots and macaws use these exposed cliffs of clay to help with their digestion. A lot of the seeds they ingest have toxins in them, so they eat chunks of clay and it neutralizes it. We watched these guys for a while. These are all red and green macaws with one single scarlet macaw off to the far left when I panned over.
