So I’ve been thinking...
I kind of want to write a fic involving a character living with high-functioning OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) since, well, OCD characters are few and far between and typically the handful you do see are extreme, overt cases (Adrian Monk from the show ‘Monk’ and Slav from Voltron are the only ones I can think of). As a person with high-functioning OCD I’d like to see some representation out there.
But. I’m kind of nervous about writing a fic that would be so heavily based on my own experiences? I really don’t want to do this thing, which would be personally risky for me, just to get yelled at by strangers on the internet for not representing the condition ‘right’ when it would be based on my experiences. Essentially I’m afraid that if I write a fic with, say, a high-functioning OCD Keith (which I’ve been considering off and on for a while) people will come out of the woodwork to tell me the way I write OCD is wrong, essentially saying the way I experience OCD is ‘wrong’. (which is shit - literally everyone with OCD experiences it slightly differently because every human being is a unique and special individual)
I don’t know why I’m posting this, I kind of just want some constructive feedback because this is something that’s been on my mind a lot recently. Fandom is so discourse-heavy and so many people seem so ready to jump at each other’s throats over little things that I’m a little spooked about writing anything based on my experiences that has a chance to be torn apart by people spoiling for a fight or a Discourse.
Thoughts?
