Not anime for once.
I’ve been keeping up with Law and Order SVU for a long time... And I just watched the most recent episode... There was just no avoiding this rant, okay?
I can’t believe we lost Kat and Garland in the same episode. There’s a lot to be said-- by someone more qualified to talk about it-- about the show’s main cast being so overwhelmingly... white. So the fact that they just wrote off two POC characters in the main cast... when there were only three to begin with... is also upsetting.
Personally, losing these two hurt me in two different ways.
I really liked Garland. For so long, we had a string of upper bosses who were just assholes. Chief Dodds kind of came around after his son died, but it was usually something to groan about when the chief was coming by. Garland was likable, genuinely cared about doing right by the people they were helping--not just winning cases and purporting a good image-- and felt like he was actually working with our main crew, not just barking orders. SVU’s storylines have always been strongly influenced by current events, so of course the heightened racial tensions were going to come into play. It leaves such a bad taste in my mouth that Garland was chased out of office-- there’s no other way to put it-- for acknowledging that they’ve been wrong and supporting making changes in the department. But I’m also just going to genuinely miss him as a character. And Chief McGrath better have some awful end coming for him.
Kat’s a little more difficult. Because I did like her character... but mostly for the representation in her case, as she was barely developed as a person. SVU has always had an eye on LGBT+ issues. But it only really sunk in once Kat joined the team that it took them 20+ years to have an LGBT main character. (It was a big thing for a while that Fin’s son is gay, but we hardly ever see him. Frankly, early on, it would have been more impactful if it was one of Elliot’s kids, as his family played such a role in his life and the show.) And now Kat’s already gone. And I’ve been reading that it wasn’t even the actress’s decision.
It’s disappointing in a way that the show’s never really disappointed me before. Even when I was going back and watching some of the earlier episodes that are a little dated now.
You’ve always had my support in the past, SVU. Do better.
