Another great video from Matt Easton from Scholagladitoria on the so called ‘Flank Officers’ sabres. In this video he focuses more on their use and the possible fighting benefits of these short curved swords. I found it interesting that seen next to the 1796 Pattern Heavy Cav. Dress sword it didn’t seem that much shorter despite only having a 28 inch blade (measured in a straight line, from hilt to tip).
Unusual Hilt Problems: Highland Claymore Basket Hilts in Victorian Times
Problems with Highland broadsword basket hilts in the Victorian era, and ergonomic design solutions.
This is an extremely important video to watch if you do most of your medieval history study online as a hobby. Context is very important. Images and artifacts in a vacuum paint a distorted picture of history and will lead you astray.

I think Matt is copying me. A short video on techniques of the Basket-hilted Broadsword featuring Jay Maas of the Cateran Society and the book I just reviewed, Lessons of the Broadsword Masters.
Matt Easton is just messing with us now.
