Yeah, but he did it like a star. (The other children's librarians are so pushy, they once asked me to write a mystery for the summer program and then cast me as the dead body! In my own damn play!)

I think the strangest concept for a play I’ve ever been in was probably the time that my secondary school put on A Midsummer Night’s Dream set in the 1980s and it was the most fever dream-ified imagining of 1980s you could possibly imagine.
The Mechanicals were protesting miners. There were three Pucks and they were distinguishable by their spiked blue and purple wigs. Every time Helena stepped on stage they played Kiss by Prince. The theme music of the entire show was You Can't Hurry Love by Phil Collins. We brought an actual dog on stage for the play within a play at the end, and one performace all the Athenians were so distracted by the dog backstage that Theseus had to improvise-monologue her way through a scene. Demetrius was a nerd and Lysander was a jock. There were tyres on stage at all times for no clear reason.
I was a faerie in the chorus, a role that required me to wear neon workout gear, neon leg warmers, neon fishnet gloves, a multicoloured wig, black fairy wings, and black lipstick. What social category of the 80s did they call this, you ask? Punks.
Shakespeare would be proud.
I just took a look at Playbill's statistics for the musicals and plays most often performed by high schools. One statistic among the non-musical plays stood out for me:
The most frequently performed Shakespeare play in US high schools is A Midsummer Night's Dream.
On the one hand, this isn't surprising. It's a fantasy-comedy with easy appeal for all ages and a happy ending, and it's very much an ensemble play, not a play that revolves around just a few lead performers: it gives many different young actors with different talents a chance to shine.
But in a way it is surprising, because you wouldn't guess its popularity from fictional media. In sitcoms, cartoons, middle grade books, etc., whether in high school, middle school, or even elementary school, it seems that Shakespeare productions in schools are always Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, and more Romeo and Juliet.
Of course this is mainly for shipping potential between the boy and girl playing the two leads: "the protagonist plays Romeo or Juliet with their secret crush as their co-star" is probably the most common variant. But even when there's no shipping, Romeo and Juliet tends to be the play of choice: for example, the Brady Bunch episode where Marcia is cast as Juliet and becomes an arrogant prima donna.
I'd like to see more sitcoms and cartoons use A Midsummer Night's Dream for their school Shakespeare productions and mine its potential for comedy and shipping.
Did you ever have the lead role in a school play?
Yes, more than once
Yes, once
No, but I had a different role
No, I've never taken part in a school play
DERRY SCHOOL PLAYYY!
So the Derry schools just had their Christmas play and it was AWESOME! I helped design some of the costumes and it was flipping awesome. @stan-the-bird-boy and @eddiekaspbrak-official did AWESOME.
For those who didn’t see it, it was Christmas Carol, IN DERRY, and here’s a picture Eddie snuck and took of his Christmas Past costume. It’s sorta girly but it’s like.. he’s a heyday glamorous dude before gender norms slapped him down and the glam was ruined.
Eddie may not be pregnant but he always does deliver!
Here’s a picture that’s a bit more professional-looking of Stan’s Christmas Yet To Come. You can’t even tell it’s him.
I woullllld tag Henry bc Patrick is like the student director or whatever the flip but he said he’s gonna make his own post, and also sometimes he’s an asshole. So courtesy of @sonia-kaspbrak-official here’s a picture of all of us outside the school ready to see Eds and Stan The Man:
@richie-trashmouth-tozier is so proud of his boyfriend, @mikehanlon76 is just there (hi Mike) @people-call-me-haystack is AWESOME AS ALWAYS, and @bill--denbrough looks kind of emo but who cares. OUTFITS ALL ON ME.. yeah I got Ben that necklace teehee. Yeah my dress is festive so I’ll probably not wear it again until next Christmas but still!
The gun references, modern stuff, and Scrooge almost-cursing were a bit weird, but hey, Patrick’s the director, what did we expect. So.. yay! Christmas Carol go brrr!
say you hate me (kiss me after)

quote:
“i hate you”
Clay leaned down to kiss George’s chest. Kissed down, down further, mouth hot on his pale skin. “I hate you too, baby. “
reccer’s note: Personally, my favorite part of this fic was just how obsess dream is with george, like wanting to kiss him so bad 🤭 especially at the first part! I also really like the smutty/sexual tension scenes cause who doesnt??

Doomstar Requiem and Rock Academy at the Highline Ballroom
…how come we never talk about the 🎸king Doomstar Requiem school play (well as I call it anyway there’s no like props or costumes or anything, it’s more concert style but still they performed a Klok opera in its entirety!) and how Brendon Small was a sweet enough dude to lend his time and energy to this. And while I do understand the concern about how Metalocalypse is a hard R and the content isn’t altered that much, I get that but then again to paraphrase Deadpool 2 “Doomstar is a family movie” /hj….no but seriously at least the vast majority are like teenagers that are at least old enough to interact with the media without issues (and presumably the 10-13 year olds at least had like guidance at least).
Still though pretty impressive performance which I don’t expect less from a music academy, and where else on YouTube can you see a bunch of kids chant “you’re gay” and not be seen as assholish?
