Here are my thoughts on rereading Book 1 of School for Good and Evil

Ive literally been obsessed with this book series since I was like 11 and now I’m 20 so I have some thoughts!! The last time I reread the series in full I was like 17?

DISCLAIMER I AM JUST A GIRL WHO ENJOYS THESE BOOKS. No Jane Austen so don’t expect groundbreaking stuff people just my opinions

• First of all Agatha is literally the best character in this book. Like her character development is incredible. The section with Dovey and finding her beauty AAAH. Gets!!me!!every!!time!! Like no one deserves her loyalty. I also forgot how smart she was. Like ok brains!

• I’m sorry I can’t stand personally Sophie in the book. I couldn’t when I was 11 and I can’t now. But she definitely is the cause of some of my fave moments e.g when she tricks Tedros into turning against Agatha “Learned that from my favourite princess” (SO MANIPULATIVE AND EVIL I LOVE IT) She is just such a great character to read but irks me at the same time.

• Sophie and Agatha’s relationship in this book just so meh to me now. Like I used to be like oh #besties!! But now I’m like “Agatha STAND UP FOR URSELF” I get it’s a huge part of the book but Sophie truly doesn’t deserve that level of friendship IM SORRY. Also Agatha I love you but you are such a doormat sometimes

• Fun fact I used to hate Tedros when I first read the books. 11 year old me was like nah. I just did not get the appeal at all. Now I definitely understand him better and actually like him!! Like the trauma from his parents is sooo apparent and just makes him so much deeper than I actually realised at 11 lol. My heart was breaking when Sophie revealed herself at the Trials (I still think “god he was such a cry baby in this book”)

• The coven of course iconic as always. Hester was one of my favourite parts of this reread. The dynamic with Agatha CHEFS KISS

• Hort was pathetic as always !! He is one of my fave characters so can slander him too much bless. HIS POOR PJS!

• The background Nevers: Ravan (ICON), Brone, Vex, Mona, Arachne. Definitely prefer them over the Evers. I just loved every piece of dialogue they had. It makes me sad that they weren’t as involved as the books go on :( And honestly the Never camaraderie is far superior to the Evers and I’m an Ever myself! The background Evers are okayyyyyyy. I have a soft spot for Chaddick (if you know you KNOW)

• Beatrix when she bashed Agatha into the wall. Fuming. Also Tedros should have strangled the bunny. WHO SAID THAT

• School Master can die hate you OLD CREEP. No notes

• The scene at the circus of talents with the wolves and fairies. EVERYTIME.MAKES.ME.SO.EMOSH. Shoutout old white wolf. I FORGOT SOPHIE KILLED THEM??!

• One opinion that hasn’t changed however is Tedros and Agatha’s slow burn in this book. Like yes PLEASE. The scene when she faints. Him choosing her in Yubas class. THE SCENE WHEN SHE SAYS SHE HAS PUT A HEX ON HIM. Best ship in the series I SAID IT!

• While reading I was trying to picture the age of the characters. For Sophie and Agatha I was thinking like 14?? Has it ever been confirmed how old they are anyways

• Honestly I was itching back to read it as soon as I stopped. This series is just so nostalgic to me.

I’m not excited to read about Aric though. BOO BOO TOMATOE TOMATOE (but like who is his dad fr?!?)

I just read Soman Chainani’s diary entry about Wicked. He goes on about how he took ages out of his book, yet offers no explanations for the plot hole in book 3 about Hester’s and Hansel and Gretel’s ages lmao.

ok guys, hot take but there so many plotholes in the Fall and the Rise?? like as much as i love the series, i feel as if Soman could’ve found a way to cover these up. 

first of all, on the cover art of the Rise, rhian has blue eyes and rafal has green eyes, for whatever reason. in the first book, the school master is said to have blue eyes, and in the third book, the school master introduces himself as Rafal.

okay, makes sense so far, but when the Rise starts is when it gets confusing. in the Rise, Rafal has green eyes and Rhian has blue?? okay, cus in Fall, Rhian kills Rafal, all that stuff, turns into him, and takes his place, right? but if Rhian has blue eyes and Rafal has green, then shouldn’t one of the staff members recognize that Rhian was the one who killed Rafal and not the other way around?

but this is even more confusing in the Fall, bc on its cover, their eye colors switch and Rhian has green and Rafal has blue, like literally everyone thought. was this intentional? or was it just a print mistake, which I think is unlikely.

so is Soman trying to confuse us, or???

and the whole figuring out each others true aliance was like a low budget gender reveal, cus like? why did Rhian switch up on his brother so fast? like you’re telling me you spent centuries convincing yourself that you were Good, but the moment you fall for someone and kidnap them, you find out you’re Evil?? like woah buddy, calm down. Rafal was honestly so valid for wanting to kill Rhian cus I would pissed too.

also Rafal finding out he was Good was completely spontaneous too! he literally spent centuries, TORTURING his students for breaking the rules, and wow, he does a single good deed and poof he’s a good guy now? i love the prequel series, but i feel like they could’ve been better explained, not saying that I could do better, but still, the character arcs seemed to fast and rushed.

also, Rafal’s death didn’t really impact me like it did with Merlin’s. it was fast, sudden, and not really heartfelt. sure, it was sad to see the two brothers make up and finally get along before the bitch-ass pen comes and changes everything, but Rhian suddenly stabbing Rafal like that was very expected, especially since we were nearing teh end of the book and needed to see the death of one of the twins soon, sooo.

but this was just me yapping, so don’t take it seriously(soman is always watching)
