It is believed that all vertebrates descend from the larva of a filter feeder that stopped metamorphosing, staying in its mobile juvenile stage for life. Much like tunicates today, the adults would have been simple animals with two syphons to filter out nutrients from the water. This ancient transformation is thought to be the basis for the incurable disease Retromorphosis Maligna, where dormant genes reactivate and remodel the body into its "adult" sessile form.

Over the course of 1–2 years, retromorphosis patients will undergo a series of changes:

Atrophy of limbs and fusion into a single "stem", with digits extending like roots to keep the body stable.

Simplification of the digestive system into a water-filtering tube, with either end turning into an ingress and egress syphon.

Complete degeneration of the nervous system.

Once started, this disease is incurable and lethal, though brain death tends to occur before the ceasing of metabolic function. The onset of retromorphosis appears to require a genetic predisposition, with environmental factors triggering it later in life. These factors are not yet understood.

You weren’t sure when the line began to blur : between curiosity and complicity, between admiration and something stranger.

At first, it was just a research opportunity. A rare apprenticeship under one of Piltover's most controversial scientific minds, buried far beneath Zaun in a lab that always felt too cold, no matter how many hours you spent there.

Singed didn’t smile much. He didn’t talk unless it served the experiment. His voice was steady, low, and detached yet oddly soothing in its precision.

“Give me the stabilizer,” he said, eyes fixed on the tank in front of him.

You did without hesitation. Your fingers brushed his glove. He didn’t flinch, but he did glance at you just a flicker. Like he was cataloguing the sensation.

The creature inside the tank thrashed, translucent skin rippling with bio-luminescent veins. It had once been a rat. Now it was something else entirely.

“I don’t understand,” you murmured, reading over the notes. “This mutation—its cell division shouldn’t be sustainable.”

He looked up at you, slowly. Not as a scolding mentor. As something else. “Exactly.”

That was the moment something shifted.

You’d expected pride. Or perhaps cold dismissal. Instead, you saw something else in his gaze: a flicker of… admiration? Maybe even something possessive. Like he was proud not just of your observation—but of you.

From then on, he let you closer.

He asked your opinion more often. Gave you the most dangerous tasks. Let you document things he hadn’t trusted to paper in years.

And you said yes every time.

You told yourself it was for the science. For the prestige. For the chance to change the world.

But in the silence of the lab, sometimes you caught him watching you.

Not in the way someone watches a peer. In the way a chemist watches an unstable compound.

Fascinated. Intrigued. Aware it could all blow up with the wrong touch.

“You have an instinct,” he said once, after you'd stopped a reaction from melting straight through the floor. “A certain edge.”

“You sound surprised,” you said quietly, not looking up.

He didn’t answer. But the corner of his mouth twitched—barely noticeable. If you hadn’t known him so well by now, you might have missed it.

Then came the night you stayed too late.

The experiment had gone sideways. The test subject : a hybrid strain had begun deteriorating too fast. You stayed past midnight to run diagnostics, your hands shaking from the cold and lack of sleep.

Singed didn’t tell you to go home. He just watched. Hovered.

“You don’t take care of yourself,” he said after a long silence.

You looked at him. The lab lights buzzed overhead, casting strange shadows. “Neither do you.”

That… made him smile.

Just barely.

You didn’t know what it meant.

Later, when the trial was done and the sample destroyed, you leaned back against the workbench, fingers stained with something you couldn’t quite name.

He stood near, not touching, but close enough to feel the weight of his presence.

“You know,” he said, voice quieter than usual, “this would not be possible without you.”

You turned your head to look at him. “Is that your version of gratitude?”

“It’s a fact,” he said. But there was something else in his tone. Something that made your skin prickle.

He reached out slowly—gloved fingers grazing the side of your neck, like checking your pulse. Scientific. Almost.

But not quite.

And in that silence, you realized something:

You had become part of the experiment.

Not the subject. Not quite the partner either. But something in between. Essential. Observed. Treasured, in a way that made your chest tighten.

And when he said softly, “Stay,” he didn’t mean for the night.

He meant for the work.

For the madness.

For whatever was slowly growing between you that had no name in science.

And you… didn’t say no because you wanted to stay with him.

Vampires were an extinct human subspecies, discovered and then de-extinct through morally questionable genetic engineering research in the year 1981 by The Genomic Innovation Institute (or G.I.I) in an attempt at finding cures for some neurological disorders through gene therapy and tweaked retroviruses. Thanks to these… Morally questionable experiments, It was discovered that some specific dormant genes were extremely widely spread throughout the population and that these genes could be reactivated in some individuals. In certain cases some of these genes express spontaneously. This gave rise to the theory that some neurological disorders could at least partly arise from the expression of these genes albeit in a very “broken” and rudimentary form. Essentially the treatments to cure certain types of neurological disorders turned out to activate some of these dormant genes, essentially turning the test subjects into what we now call a Vampire. The Genomic Innovation Institute decided to pursue research on this subspecies, hoping to turn a profit. Thanks to them, we now have a complex understanding of Vampires…

They were humanity's natural predator, emerging between 300,000 and 200,000 years ago, around the same time as Homo sapiens, or at least shortly after. They hunted our ancestors with brutal efficiency, to the point that even though we eventually forgot about them (before bringing them back from extinction), they remained engraved in our cultural memory. For lack of better words, they were the things we feared were in the dark.

It's difficult to identify ancient vampire remains, as their identifying traits are primarily neurological and soft tissue-related. However, their skeletal structure does have some minor differences, which allow for identification now that we know what to look for. It seems that vampires began going extinct around 2000 BCE, with their population drastically reducing as civilization emerged. Their extinction was due to more than one factor. 

-Vampires were extremely antisocial, which makes sense for a predatory species whose prey resembled it that much. This however did complicate mating between vampires because vampires didn't just tend to ignore each other but would see other vampires as threats and would often attempt to dispatch each other upon contact. Since sexual dimorphism is quite lacking in Vampires, which not only resulted in both of the sexes looking very androgynous, it also meant that both Male and Female had essentially the same musculature and strength and general ferocity, sexual coercion would have most likely resulted in one or both of the party's demise or heavy maiming, rendering it extremely inefficient. Plus, vampires seemed to generally be very uninterested in copulation, though it did happen from time to time. Strangely enough all of this seemed to have made the idea of mating with humans more appealing for some Vampires which is why like with Homo Neanderthal, Vampiric DNA can be found in modern day humans. (The mating behaviours of Vampires will be discussed more thoroughly in another chapter)

-The Emergency of euclidean architecture seemed to have greatly affected vampires. We discovered that in their eyes, the receptor cells that respond to horizontal lines are cross wired with those that respond to vertical ones. When both are fired simultaneously in a specific way it'll result in quite a violent seizure. We call the effect “The Crucifix Glitch”. While the glitch will only trigger when intersecting right angles occupy more than 30° of visual arc, we discovered, thanks to our currents subjects, that the simple suggestion of the Crucifix Glitch being triggered is enough in 75% of cases to completely dissuade an attack, if they had been exposed to it previously (depending on the vampire's current emotional state). These seizure are quite violent, reminiscent of Tonic-Clonic seizures, but because of the vampire's particular muscular structure and their higher distribution of fast twitch muscle fibers, these seizures tend to result in dislocated limbs much more often than regular seizure. Plus, with the Vampire's unique neurochemistry, we suspect that the seizures are much more distressing for them. In conclusion, the seizures caused by the Crucifix Glitch are extremely traumatizing and painful for vampires to the point that any right angles, even if not in a context that could induce the glitch, will usually make a vampire extremely uncomfortable and anxious (work best if they've been exposed to the glitch at some point in their life). Because of this a lot of the vampires did not even dare to approach human settlements with euclidean architecture, which greatly complicated things for the overall survival of the species.

-Vampires make for terrible parents. Given their natural antisocial behaviour, it’s unsurprising that they aren’t the best caregivers. Despite their longer lifespans, one might expect them to invest more time and effort in their offspring, but this is not the case. In fact, it’s quite the opposite; their longer lifespans and fertility lead them to essentially not value their offspring, as they can always have another later on in life. The father is most likely going to be completely absent, as he typically feels no compulsion to ensure the survival of his offspring. The mother, on the other hand, while interested in her child's survival, is not as invested as one might expect from a primate species. She won't hesitate to abandon her offspring if she considers it a liability. She'll usually take care of it up until it's pre teenage years where she'll abandon it. However, some exceptions to this were found, as we've recently found proof of a Vampire Pack, more on this in a later entry.

-Mating with humans: As previously mentioned, vampires tend to be awful parents, to the extent that some began mating with humans. Why? Because it was easier. Human mating rituals were simple for vampires to emulate, and once mating was complete, the male vampire could leave, confident that its offspring would be cared for. Meanwhile, the female vampire could stay with the human and be looked after during her pregnancy, a wolf in sheep's clothing, she could discreetly sustain her need for blood by feeding on humans in the tribe or even her mate. Once she gave birth, she could either leave or continue caring for her children with a continuous blood supply. Another tactic vampire would use to get out of raising their young is “Brood Parasitism”. They would kidnap human children and replace them with their own. We believe that this is what gave birth to the legends of “Changelings”.

Overall the extinction of Vampires wasn't due to one reason but a combination of many things. A reminder of how evolution might screw you over. You may have been a perfectly adapted predator but something seemingly insignificant can truly come back to bite you.

Speaking of biting, the infamous bite of Vampires while not exactly as described in myths, is nothing to joke about...

What do we really know about reality?

Not much. And anyone who says otherwise is lying or applying for a grant.

Let’s be precise:

We don’t know what consciousness is. We don’t know why the double slit experiment still breaks causality in front of a live audience. We don’t know if we're the only conscious species. Hell— we don’t even know if rocks are watching.

You think that’s ridiculous?

The only reason you’re convinced a chair isn’t conscious is because it doesn’t blink. Not because you understand sentience. But because it doesn’t play by your nervous system’s rules.

We define consciousness like we define god:

Only in terms of what serves us. And what we can’t explain?

We either name it or ignore it. Usually both.

Now here’s the creepy part.

🪞 The mirror doesn’t reflect you. It renders you.

And if you look too long— especially in the dark— you’ll notice the delay. The drag. The not-quite-there-ness of the version that comes back.

Scientists can’t explain why particles behave differently when they’re watched. That’s the double slit problem.

Observation changes behavior.

That’s not metaphor. That’s physics. That’s terror.

Now ask yourself: What happens when you are the particle?

And the mirror is doing the watching.

In daylight, you get away with it. You look. It shows. Done. Same face. Same rules. No threat.

But in the dark?

The rules get fuzzy. The rendering gets slow. The self-awareness gets… too loud.

🕳️ Look into a mirror in the dark. Smile.

Wait for it to return it.

That’s the trap. That’s the invitation. Because you’ve created a closed loop between consciousness and its unconfirmed reflection.

The mirror doesn’t light up like a screen. It doesn’t send. It receives.

And at some threshold— low light, high focus, high uncertainty— it stops being a reflection and starts becoming a response.

It waits. It watches.

Not like a person. Like something calculating whether you know what you are.

🧪 Here’s the reality check:

Science still can’t explain why consciousness is private.

Why you can’t hear my thoughts. Why you’ll never know if your friend is real or just really good at pretending.

Why your dog knows when you’re dying but can’t describe the color blue.

Now add a mirror.

Now remove the light.

Now smile.

You’re asking the oldest quantum question in the dumbest possible way:

“Are you me?”

And if the mirror ever answers back without your face moving first— you’ve broken something you weren’t cleared to test.

🔬 Observation is power. It makes particles behave. It forces collapse. It pulls waveforms into shape.

But mutual observation?

That’s warfare. That’s a standoff. That’s one of you losing first.

Ever felt that impulse to stare at your reflection in the dark until it stopped feeling like you?

That wasn’t curiosity. That was the invitation already loading the file.

The body is good at ignoring horror. But it still flinches when reality starts shimmering at the edges.

The mirror is a shimmer. The dark is a carrier. The smile is the handshake.

Here’s the sequence:

You stare.

You smile.

Your brain compensates.

Your sense of self detaches.

Your face doesn’t move.

You wait.

It returns the smile.

Too late.

You’re the experiment now. And the result is being written from the inside out.

You think this is a creepypasta?

Go ask a physicist why observation changes behavior at the quantum level.

Then ask them why they avoid mirrors in low light.

They won’t answer.

Because they don’t want to know.

🪞 Mirrors are not neutral.

They’re the first place we tested being human. And the first time something looked back.

Before god, before science, before mirrors had silver or glass—

they were still surfaces that recognized.

And sometimes, they didn’t recognize you as the original.

You don’t smile into a mirror in the dark to check your teeth. You do it because part of you wants to be caught.

Wants to be watched. Wants to find out what happens when the rendering forgets to follow.

That’s not bravery. That’s biological suicide.

You’re not supposed to confirm yourself without light. The light is the buffer. It makes sure your reflection follows the laws. It’s the contract enforcer.

Remove it? You’ve entered grey code space. No witnesses. No causality. Just two “selves” pretending not to blink first.

So don’t smile. Don’t wait. Don’t test the sync rate.

And for god’s sake— don’t ever whisper to it.

The sound will loop. And if it returns from behind the glass instead of within your mouth— that’s not your echo. That’s the mirror’s answer.
