What are we doing here?
Lea hummed thoughtfully and put her hands behind her shell. "I just thought you would enjoy the view up here! And fresh air is always nice."
She hadn't grown up with a father, but the look he gave her clearly gave her the message that he didn't believe her. She grinned nervously before turning back to the cityscape. Just a few more minutes of stalling, then they could go back to April's...
That was a bad plan.
Mike eyed the scorched, smoking, bubbling mess on the bench top in the lab. "Maybe, maybe," he conceded after a moment's thought. "But you gotta admit, it looked mighty impressive when it all went up!" He glanced over to the scientist, a grin on his face. "Next time maybe we should try MORE fire."

The tree was nearly complete. Nearly perfect. All the ornaments seemed to glisten against the strung up lights like the snow that reflected the city night outside, but one was still missing.
Reverentially raising a small, worn cello that dangled from a golden string, April hooked it on a branch where it would hold a prominent place of honor in the entire display. Stepping back, she considered the ornament with a thoughtful frown. To anyone else, it would look tacky and out of place, dangling alongside the more sophisticated gold and red balls that dotted the tree. Anyone else couldn't have known.
Strong, steady hands rested on her shoulders, giving them a gentle squeeze. He knew, though. Turning to face him, April gently leaned in on the tips of her toes and kissed her father, wrapping her arms around his neck and burying into the warmth of his worn jacket, breathing in its familiar scent. "Merry Christmas, Daddy..."
