Still in disbelief that our federation is doing this but I guess he's now a bona fide social media heartthrob. Good for him.

Photographer Danielle Earl has shared these photos of Stephen ahead of the Olympics. The photo on the left is from the pre-novice men's SP at 2013 Thornhill Summer Skate. Stephen was representing Thornhill FSC, and this was his first known competition in Canada at the age of 8. The photos from this SP can be found here, and the FS is here.

What a fantastic skate from Stephen this evening. Superb energy, clean jumps, and that confidence we saw him radiate in the past returning to him. He nearly broke 100 points. Just amazing. Job exceedingly well done.

Nine long and hard years later the kid who won pre-novice, novice, and junior back-to-back was crowned senior National champion. Congratulations.
Benoît Richaud shared some lovely photos and a video from behind the scenes at Nationals. I like that they're always eating delicious meals together. I'm glad Stephen and Benoît were able to form a strong bond.

Stephen speaking to the media today.
He revealed he did 3 courses last semester and he's planning to do 4 this season. What kind of crazy work ethic does this guy have to be studying full time at University of Toronto and having a high level skating career? It's not even about being academically gifted - a four course load is just a lot of work on its own. Not to mention juggling all the deadlines for coursework, term tests, and finals with skating competitions. I hope at least the Department of Political Science is being understanding of his athletic commitments.
Skate Ontario's caption:
Stephen Gogolev is approaching Nationals with focus and excitement after a long season of growth and hard work. When asked about if the Olympics has added more pressure, he says “most competitions this season have had that kind of pressure. Obviously this is the end point. I think it’s exciting — it’s been a long season” For Stephen, the key has been consistency. “That’s something I work really hard on. I haven’t had it in previous seasons, but thanks to being healthy and training consistently at home, I’ve been able to build it this year.” With preparation, focus, and a strong season behind him, Stephen is ready to take the ice at Nationals. Join us in wishing him the best of luck this weekend!
