There is just...so much not being done that seems obvious to me, a layperson. And I get that it's partly because we don't really know all the details of this virus, but there are so many ways to mitigate the fallout (namely rapidly reshaping how we pay for healthcare) that the people who have the power aren't bothering to do.
No, you’re right: all of the original fuckups that lead to this being a pandemic rather than a concern do not require details of the virus. You’re right that there’s a lot that could have been done, and a lot of it was done for H1N1, SARS, and MERS, and then Trump just fucking . . . decided not to. Like, Xi is also at fault: the reason this is so bad is that there were two narcissistic global leaders lying about things over the winter.
But we could have solid had track and trace starting in January when we had the first confirmed case in Seattle. We didn’t.
We could have used the German tests that worked well. We didn’t. We wanted American made. So instead of the already horrifying false negative rate of 30% observed in China, ours is between 30% and 60%, and we fucked testing up a lot.
We could have acknowledged person to person transmission in January, when it was known. The CDC acknowledged it January 30, but people kept doubting, because messaging was inconsistent.
It was wildly fucking inconsistent. USAToday has a timeline that demonstrates some of this pretty well: Redfield said Jan 30 that it wasn’t a public health emergency, Trump declared a public health emergency. Also, shipping back 195 Americans and then banning entry from China was straight up racist.
The inconsistent messaging about the availability of testing was the first and biggest step in how this administration fucked us, I think. Crisis communication, it’s been shown in study after study, needs to be measured, transparent, and timely. We fucked every aspect of that.
As we close in on 100,000 dead, this is genocide by incompetence. And I will never stop being angry about it.

Okay, well, first of all: No. Not allowed. There can be Only One Bianca, and Varric’s crossbow won the name fair and square. Dwarf Bianca’s just going to have to change hers. Hawke will continue calling her Dwarf Bianca until this happens.
Second: Fuck Dwarf Bianca. Hawke may not have known about her specifically until many years into her friendship with Varric, but she knew there was something up and often had to help get rid of the assassins sent after Varric every time they got together. And Hawke is the one Varric goes to every time the whole situation gets to be too much.
So yeah. Finally getting to meet Dwarf Bianca? Face to face? She’s lucky Hawke didn’t punch her (for Varric’s sake)… then, at least. Dwarf Bianca threatening Hawke over Varric’s wellbeing at the end of that quest? Well, Varric definitely didn’t approve, but Dwarf Bianca was asking for it.
