Thoughts on Scott Benzel’s “ Conspiracy Theories”
I thought Scott’s lecture was really very intriguing but I had a very difficult time finding the throughline and the “conspiracy” aspect of all the subjects he brought up. The lecture felt like he was laying the foundation and while some aspects of his lecture felt like they were talking about conspiracy theories more of it seem to be found in language and how we as a species communicate out thoughts and feelings through writing, art, and the sort of strangeness of it. I guess Scott’s lecture makes me question the concept of what is and is not a conspiracy. Cleary the idea the Led Zepplin was trying to spread the word of Satan through his song “Stairway to Heaven” feels very strongly like a conspiracy theory but twins speaking in “Cryptophasia” feels like it’s based in sceince, not conspiracy. Where is the line of fact? What makes something a conspiracy?
When I was 6, my 2-year-old brother started speaking, but in a language of his own devising. I was eager to enlist him in games (my favorite: "Slave")...
