Posey is quietly the life of the Giants’ party (SF Chronicle)
Posey goes about his hero business quietly, leaving a smaller wake than any of the other big boats. In terms of temperament and maturity and leadership, Posey and Curry could be twin brothers — and Posey would be the quieter and more reserved of the two.
In most interview situations, Posey is thoughtful and helpful, but seldom expansive or colorful. Is that who he is?
People close to the team say Posey is looser when the media isn’t lurking, but it’s not like he puts a lampshade on his head when the cameras leave.
“He’s the same off the field as he is on,” said Crawford, one of Posey’s best friends on the team. “He jokes around a little bit more (around his teammates) than he probably does with you guys, but no, he’s the same guy.”
Javier Lopez, another Posey pal, said, “He likes to have fun like everyone else, but he is quiet and calm, and I think that’s what makes him tick. He likes to let loose and have a good time, but when it’s time to work, it’s time to work.”
Which brings to mind Posey’s speech at the 2010 victory rally, when he said, essentially, “Great win. Let’s all enjoy it for about five minutes, then start working like dogs for next season.”
That’s kind of Posey’s style as a team leader. Work hard, set an example, but don’t be a jerk about it. His leadership is pretty much organic, not forced or phony or confrontational. It’s almost as if he leads by causing teammates to be afraid of disappointing Buster Ballgame.
“He’s an approachable guy, which is something you need in a team leader,” Lopez said. “You don’t want to be afraid of somebody. You want to be able to confide in someone, and he’s always available.”
