Humanity is a fallen civilization and it doesn't even know it, and I'm not talking about Pattern Screamers.
Let's imagine thousands of years ago, humanity was at it's peak, they achieved marvels of technology, yet still they always hung in the balance, forever on the edge of some anomaly destroying the entire human race. They could fend off most of these dangerous anomalies, but there was always some they couldn't. So they put all of their brains and power towards building a machine that could make sure that even if they all died, they could live on. This was a machine that could rebuild the sun if they needed to, and they anchored it in time and space so it could never be destroyed.
Then one day, the worse did pass, humanity was all but wiped out. But the Machine worked! The new humanity fought off their killers and returned to life as it was. They did this over millennia, ages longer then any human could conceivably imagine. Yet... it was imperfect. Things, knowledge, culture, science it imperceptibly fell through the cracks, not noticed as humanity marched on.
By the time they realized it was happening, it was to late, the knowledge was lost, and now they didn't even understand how their machine fully operated. They tried desperately to fix it, to get it to work, but they couldn't restore it to it's peak performance, they eventually lost the knowledge of what it could fully do all together.
Now a days they struggle to keep the machine afloat, it's inner workings all but a mystery. They hide the machine from the rest of the world, hoping to prevent anyone from damaging it any further. No one knows how they built it, no one even knows when they built it, yet they catalog it in their database still, an eternal reminder as to their hubris of thinking that living forever came without consequences, yet they do not even know it. The old name has been forgot, replaced with the name SCP-2000
