We have an exciting set of Scratch classes up ahead at Makerspace Manila!
Music Coders -Â Students will build an interactive band that creates sounds. They will add sprites to the scene they will create and make these sprites react to an input (key press, mouse click, etc.). By the end of the class, they will learn how to make their creations animate, respond to input, and play music.
Key concepts:Â
music
sprites
input/output
key events
movement blocks
sounds
Super Animators - Students will create their own superhero character by combining different body parts/features chosen from a set of printed-out images. Students will be grouped together to build their group’s hero. After the activity, they will create the Scratch version of their superhero (originally made on paper) individually, with animation effects.
Key concepts:
animation
code blocks
graphic elements used for animation: paint tool, backgrounds, costumes
Story Crafters -Â Students will build a game that has multiple outcomes, just like some classic text-based games. Through this exercise, they will be introduced to basic logic flow with conditional statements. Students will be grouped together to share their ideas on story flow and different game endings. Each student will plot their story on Scratch.Â
Key concepts:
game development
storytelling
if-else statements
logic flow
All classes will be taught using the visual programming language Scratch. Visit http://scratch.mit.edu for more information on the platform.
Note: All classes require students to bring their own laptop and mouse.
Good Code integrates group interaction, along with fun offline activities to aid students in understanding programming concepts.Â
