Assuming that the Capitol gave every Victor's Village the same colonial McMansion hell, it emphasizes how this is not designed to be a space of respite for the victors.
There are no front porches for impromptu social gatherings, there's no community area, the town and the grocery store are a 45-minute walk away. These homes are institutional and cold. And it's even a threat from the Capitol, because they know exactly where the victors and their families sleep. It's not so much a cage as it is an artificially constructed habitat. It's the zoo in a different font.
And I know that this is just the movie concept art, but I'm trying to think of a new amputee Peeta navigating these stairs and long walks, and my heart just breaks for the kid.
“Somewhere, in a cool and spotless room, a Gamemaker sits at a set of controls, fingers on the triggers that could end my life in a second. All that is needed is a direct hit.”
In re-reading sotr I was wondering why they’d lay out the tribute’s plates in district order around the cornucopia for the gong.
On first read I thought it was another way of helping distinguish a tribute’s origin to the audience, like the colour coding. But then I was wondering which district would be the worst off from that arrangement and it hit me: District Three. Ampert.
Three has One and Two to one side, and Four and Five to their other. The worst odds of the bunch. It was another way of targeting Ampert for a bloody death, with Beetee forced to watch.
because i am always and forever shitting on the aspects of the Hunger Games movies that I didn't like (although i do think that, as a book to film adaptation, they overall did an incredible job)
I want to share a bit from the first film that has haunted me for years.
THIS moment is my absolute favorite moment in the entire film series. it was, in my mind, one of the best additions they ever made to the film adaptations.
during the countdown, we hear this big, booming voice counting down. it's horrifying. it's blood chilling. you don't even WANT to imagine the absolute terror that these children are feeling as this disembodied voice counts down to the last moments of their lives.
and then it cuts to the countdown in the gamemakers' room. and you realize that the person counting down? can't possibly be more than 17. looks no older than some of the careers. is using a voice modulator because their voice is so much softer. so YOUNG.
there was SO much said in such a small cutaway and that unspoken message always stuck with me
Here follow my gap-filling headcanons on every single Hunger Games and victor for my new longfic, Favors. I incorporate canon wherever possible and fill in gaps with the headcanons.
Hope you enjoy!

Special Events/Policy Changes
First Quarter Quell
The Card had actually been written by Casca Highbottom and Crassus Snow as part of their "project" during the conception of the Games
Districts were required to hold an election and vote on the tributes
The gruesomeness of the Games as a result generated backlash
All tributes were subsequently required to at least be capable of understanding what the Games were and meeting certain physical requirements (based more on photogenic appearance than actual health)
District 2 held a competition for the position of tribute and elected the winners, preparing formally to enter the Peacekeeper Academy
District 2's Tribute Academy was formally instituted that year with the two tributes, Eileen DeLong and Lucius Adams, both 18, its first "graduates"
Districts 1 and 4 subsequently began negotiations to form their own Tribute Academies
Games Highlights
Setting: Idyllic beach, sand dunes, palm trees
Almost every district except Districts 1, 2, 4, and 10 elected physically and/or mentally disabled tributes, in multiple cases at the request of the parents
Shortest Hunger Games in history: 4 days, 5 nights
Highest bloodbath death toll in history: 17
First ever Games where the final battle was between tributes from the same District: District 2
DeLong and the other 6 non-disabled tributes were sickened and refused to kill the helpless tributes
DeLong and the pair from District 1 fled the bloodbath, while the pairs from Districts 4 and 10 fought in defense of the helpless
Victor: Lucius Adams, Age 18, District 2
Lucius had the highest personal kill count in Hunger Games history (18) plus the highest bloodbath kill count in history (13)
He was severely traumatized to the point that it was claimed he had suffered a head injury and never recovered
He was heavily sedated during his Victory Tour
His talent was supposedly rock sculpture, but no photos or films of it were ever seen
Lucius committed suicide less than 2 years after winning
The official report was that he was killed in an avalanche while hiking
First Quarter Quell Legacy: Tribute Academies/Careers
Coriolanus Snow and other Gamemakers together with Capitol security forces were the architects of the tribute academy system
The Capitol set the same terms for any district to place a tribute academy
Tribute candidates must commit to either joining the Peacekeeper Academy after their final reaping or another employment specifically sanctioned by the Capitol, in the Capitol
Tribute candidates who commit to Peacekeeping receive an income stipend dependent on interim evaluations each year, starting at the equivalent of tesserae at age 3, increasing as they grow and establish their skills
Capitol-sanctioned employment includes certain highly-skilled, closely-monitored roles in the Capitol, which heavily favors District 1 due to the number of luxury-related skills it produces (such as courtesans, entertainers, and artisans) and District 2 from Peacekeeping
Academies also received grant funds from the Capitol to operate, but must maintain a certain enrollment of instructors (who must all come from that district) and candidates each year
Only Districts 1 and 2 maintained Academies without interruption, 4 reverted to informal training within a few years years, while 3, 6, 9, and 10 sporadically qualified
