the room still smelt like sweat, cheap cologne and whatever candle you’d lit to pretend this wasn’t a terrible idea. 

you lay there, tangled in the sheets with one leg over his, and the weight of what just happened pressing down harder than his body ever had. 

Stu Macher. your best friend since freshman year, the guy who made inappropriate jokes in math class and snuck snacks into horror movie marathons. who was now tracing idle circles on your hip like this was normal. 

it wasn’t. 

“don’t look at me like that”

you told, voice still hoarse. 

but he didn’t stop touching you. 

“like what?”

his voice was calm, still laced with sleep and the aftermath of last night. 

“like this was inevitable”

you rolled away from him, the chill side of the bed biting at your bare skin. 

he sighed as you continued, pulling the blanket up and around your body. 

“like you’ve been waiting for it”

Stu propped himself up on one elbow, grin crooked and his hair a mess, and his eyes were way too soft for someone who just wrecked your friendship. 

“maybe i have. you’re hot, i’ve got eyes”

you sat up and grabbed the first shirt you could find, his unfortunately, and pulled it on over your head. 

“this can’t happen again Stu”

he stilled. 

the silence after your words was sharp. you could almost hear the shift, the moment where teasing bled into tension. 

“you mean that?”

you didn’t answer right away, didn’t want to lie. didn’t want to tell the truth either. 

“i mean.. it has to mean something or it has to mean nothing and i don’t think either of us can handle either of those”

he laughed once, bitter and soft. 

the sound made a pang of something unreadable thrum through your chest.

“you really think i do this with just anyone? that is screw up what we’ve got for fun?”

you turned to face him, arms folded over your chest. 

“wouldn’t you?”

Stu clenched his jaw, slow and unbelieving eyes following you as you sat up straighter. 

“not with you. you’re not… hell, you’re not just some girl”

you rolled your eyes at his words. 

but it didn’t stop the warmth that spread through your chest, replacing the bitterness his laugh had left. 

“exactly why we shouldn’t have done this, because now it’s a thing. now every look, every touch.. it’s going to mean something when it shouldn’t”

your voice cracked. 

“maybe it already did”

he stared at you like you were the punchline to the longest, most painful joke of his life. 

it hurt, not just to him but to you too. 

“but fine, if you say this can’t happen again, it won’t”

he said, breaking the silence as you nodded, more to convince yourself than him. 

Stu grabbed his clothes, throwing them on before he grabbed his keys, all as if he hadn’t just lit a match and dropped it into your entire dynamic. 

the door clicked shut behind him, and you were left staring at the empty bed, wondering if you’d just made the right choice, or the worst mistake of your life.
