First, thanks so much for running this blog! I found it a couple weeks ago and all the links and resources you've compiled are AMAZING! I was looking through the screenwriting contests and a lot of them offer feedback for an additional fee. I'm wondering if you have any experience with that/think it would be worth it? I don't really know anyone in my RL who would be able to offer much in the way of crit.
Hi Anon!
I think professional feedback is absolutely worth getting, but you shouldn’t submit to contests just for the feedback. It’s a waste of money and the feedback will most likely be script coverage, which can be harsh and demoralizing (and often, not very helpful. I know this because I’ve done coverage myself and know many other analysts. Here is an account from a script analyst who reads for screenwriting contests who’s account is (unfortunately) quite common within the industry. She also provides examples of common critiques that are helpful when analyzing your own script.
One thing the writer in the above blog states is, “Screenplay feedback is most effective when it’s a conversation.” This is very true, which is why it’s better to find individuals, paid or no, who are dedicated to giving you one-on-one feedback on your work. Workshop groups are also very helpful and, if possible you should join at least one, preferably several writing groups (which are free and give you a community to support you).
I know you said you don’t know anyone irl who can offer good critique… I am always happy to read over scripts and give some feedback if you are interested. I have also previously promoted @jellyfishjulie, who offers professional script coverage for a small fee.
If any of my followers are interested in being beta readers/giving feedback to other screenwriters on this site, please comment or reblog. Help Anon out!
Best,
Jules
Not all screenwriting contests are worth entering, but we've created a specially curated list of the very best screenwriting competition among the few worth spending your money on.
The purpose of this competition is to amplify voices of diversity and inclusion. The screenplays we are looking for will ultimately recognize, support, and embrace people of all faith traditions, genders, sexual orientations, all races and ethnicities, veterans, and the disabled community. These values may or may not manifest themselves in the subject matter of the scripts (we want scripts about almost anything and everything!). The way these values are represented, be it by the writers themselves or the subject matter, will be equally weighted and considered during the judging process.
Lifetime will provide an offer to the winner to develop the winning script, according to the full Rules and Regulations.
– June 6, 2016 Script Submission Period Opens – July 1, 2016 Earlybird Submission Deadline – July 22, 2016 Regular Submission Deadline – August 12, 2016 Script Submissions Period Closes – September 28, 2016 Winning Script and Applicant Announced

Film Festivals
Entering myself into all these screenplay festivals takes an investment and a whole lot of waiting. My first response is April 5th, followed by July, followed by another in September. I mean, all three contests are cool, but waiting until October to announce the winner sucks.
Two More Contests Entered
-The New York Screenwriting Contest
-Screenplay Incubation 15 (India)
