Chapter 1: Prologue
Excerpt:
“We were out of chocolate ice cream,” Stephen said. He looked over to where Zaeed was continuing the fight to resurrect his mysteriously broken bike. “Seemed like the sort of crisis that should be immediately solved.”
“Indeed,” Karin said. “Especially if the kids like ice cream.”
Stephen turned his attention back to her. “Something you need to tell me?”
Karin grinned at the implication, but shook her head. “No, my dear. We are too old for such a scare these days.” Stephen nodded solemnly, and she wondered again if he’d wanted the kids she’d told him she couldn’t have. “You remember my cousin, Brigit O’Halloran?”
“I remember the name.” Stephen had gone back to watching Zaeed. “Is she coming to visit?”
“Her son is. Caleb.” A sweet boy, the one time she’d met him. Barely more than an infant, blue eyes bright as he’d studied her in return. “He has two small children who are coming with.”
Stephen nodded. “A sudden interest in his extended family?”
“No.” Brigit had been vague, but her tone had been clear. “He needs somewhere to go. At least for a little while.”
Another nod. “Norman seems to be the place for that.” Stephen gave her a sideways look. “I don’t suppose he’s ex-military, too?”
“I have no idea.” Only a few years old, the boy had gone missing. Even buried in her school work, she’d made time to call home every few months. Kept her eye out for a small boy with those familiar blue eyes, just in case. Cried in Stephen’s arms for a child she barely knew, because the odds were, he’d never come home.
And then he had.
“I told Brigit they could stay here,” Karin said. “Until they find someplace they prefer.”
Stephen looked back at her, his own blue eyes grave. “They are welcome in our home as long as they have need.”

What started as an offer to lend out my Irish Shepard, Caleb, for some St. Patrick's Day shenanigans has turned into a full blown collaborative effort with @happychica, and I couldn't be more delighted! Thank you, my friend, for allowing Caleb, Tadhg, and Niamh into your sandbox to play! This has turned into such an amazing adventure, and we've only just gotten started! And huge thanks to @screwyouflightlieutenant for the fabulous commercial breaks! (I love these soooooooooo much!)
I hope you have so much fun with Our Flag Means Death!
We are three episodes in and it is wonderful!!! ♥️♥️♥️
oooo what's 2.1. Geminae Flammae???
This might have been on of the earlier stuff I started writing for Reagan and Will before I knew where their story really was going. It was suppose to be enemies to lovers -enemy gangs members - before they turn out to be same gang members and longtime lovers. But it turns out it can work from where their previous story will end to them meeting up at Villa during ICT.
Reunion snippet (all I got):
Lieutenant Miller wrings his fingers together, a nervous tick of the Lieutenant that William Coats quickly learned.
"I hate water. My sister drowned on the beach when we were kids while on vacation and I've never forgotten."
That explains the Lieutenant's anxiety since arriving at the Villa for N3 training.
"You'll be fine Lieutenant. We're going to make sure you make it through. No better time like the present to face your fears, yeah?" Coats places a hand over his shoulder and gives it a hard reassuring squeeze.
"Who's that?" Candice asks, her eyes wide with admiration.
All eyes follow hers, and Coats' eyes narrow. He looks on as he recognizes her trademark tattoos of skulls, roses and ravens on her neck, Misfit written on her right shaved side of her head, stars that line her left brow that accentuate her scar. Most of all, the fiery red lipstick. The blood leaves his face and he blanches. He feels his pulse quickening behind his ears out of pure hatred.
"You alright Coats? You look like you've just seen a ghost." Miller nudges his shoulders. He might as well have. A ghost from his past.

🤲what do YOU get out of writing?
I love storytelling. I love everything about it. Every story is an act of creation, a chance to create the kind of world or future I want to see, where characters who struggle can find peace, where pain has a purpose, where happy endings exist, even if they’re bittersweet. Writing a story is powerful. I get to use my imagination to bring something to life that didn’t exist before. That’s magic, to me.
🌻what makes you want to give up on writing? what makes you keep going?
I don’t know that I have ever wanted to give up on writing, but I have certainly gone through periods where I was extremely frustrated, discouraged, and ready to give up on a story. I almost quit Exordium over a Wrex POV that I couldn’t get right. I almost gave up on Fugue several times, because it was such an ambitious story, and it has often felt outside my scope and ability as a writer. When I can’t get something to come together the way I want or need it to, I just despair.
But the moment when it does finally fall together, when the right piece clicks, or the right solution dawns on me, it’s euphoric. And that’s why I don’t give up. Because I know that moment is out there. I just have to be patient.

Chapter 17: Day 6
Excerpt:
“What’d’ya mean you’re closed?”
Without another word, James thumped a bucket on the diner counter. Its contents sloshed noisily, a tiny wave threatening to breach containment.
John peered over the rim, frowning at the expected contents. “It’s green.”
“Our dumbass ex-transportation expert flooded the town’s pipes with green food coloring,” James said. His voice had that not quite formal, not quite sing-song quality to it. “While the water seems to be fine, the inside of the pipes are stained green now, which means the perfectly drinkable water comes out green now. Which means!” James pointed at the ceiling in half-hearted emphasis. “It is a health and safety violation to so much as make somebody coffee here this morning.”
Seated on the stool next to him, Kaidan looked aghast. “You don’t have *coffee*?”
“A conspiracy from your husband to make you stop drinking the stuff,” Sam teased.
John shot her a disapproving look as Kaidan rounded on him. “It is no such thing.” He took one of Kaidan’s hands in both of his. “I love you,” he said, holding that upset, coffee deprived gaze. “I would never force you to give up your gross morning ritual.”
“Which I skipped,” Kaidan said, the roller coaster of emotions finally settling at wounded annoyance, “because we were coming to the diner and James makes the best coffee in town.”
“I do,” James agreed, puffing a little with pride, “but not today, medico.”
With a groan, Kaidan folded his arms on the countertop and dropped his head onto them. “John.”

Chapter 9: Day 4 - Morning
Excerpt:
Caleb chuckled as he finished his tea. “Aye, good to go whenever you are,” he agreed. He settled his bill with Sam and followed Ashley out to her car. “You said something about the brewery in your message last night?”
Her cheeks darkened a little but she nodded. “Sorry about that. It was the only way I could think of to reach you on short notice.”
“Nothing to apologize for,” he replied, smiling at the memory of the gentle teasing at the hands of Stephen and Karin.
“I figure most of the stuff we can get either at the grocery store here or the liquor store nearby, but Arcturus Ale is a local favorite, so I thought we might head up to the brewery to get it fresh from the keg, so to speak.”
“That works for me, darlin’,” he replied with a grin as he slid into the passenger seat. She flashed him a quick, startled look as she took the driver’s side. “Tá brón orm,” he murmured quickly. “D’you not like that?”
She blinked a time or two before responding. “I didn’t say that, I just… wasn’t expecting it.” Her smile returned as she started the vehicle. “Then again, you are Irish. I suppose it’s a character flaw or something.”
Character flaw…! He laughed as he fastened his seatbelt and turned to face her. “I see someone woke up bright and sassy this mornin’. I’d best be on my toes today!”
Pulling out into the non-existent traffic, she headed out of town to the north. “Are all Irishmen as charming as you?”
One brow arched playfully. “I suppose that all depends. Is this another of your character flaws?”
“Maaaaaaybe? Or, I could just be trying to get to know Norman’s most recent guest.” She shrugged. “You never know.”

Chapter 1: Day 1
Excerpt:
“It’s hideous.”
Joker grinned like a fiend as he drained the last of his coffee. “Funny way to pronounce ‘great’.”
“It’s grotesque,” James insisted. The diner’s only cook turned to its only waitress. “Tell him, Sam.”
“It’s in the spirit of the holiday,” Joker insisted. His smile refused to dim in the light of Sam’s doubtful hum. “Tell me it doesn’t just scream ‘St. Patty’s Day’.”
“It screams ‘low budget and last minute,” James muttered. Shaking his head, he headed back toward the kitchen.
Doing his best to look affronted, Joker turned back to his dining companion. “You’re the town artist - what do you think?”
Peering over his mug, Shepard studied the giant inflatable statue outside the diner’s window. “It’s…awful.” He returned Joker’s look of betrayed surprise with a grin of his own. “I bet the council will love it.”
“Not that is just uncalled for,” Joker said. He scowled as Shepard laughed and Sam disappeared back behind the counter. “You know damn well I’m trying to lose this job. Don’t tell me now that you think they’ll approve of my terrible plan.”
“So you knew it was terrible, then?” Shepard asked. Setting down his mug, he frowned. “And since when am I the town artist?”
“Of course.” Ignoring the second question, Joker gestured to the thing in the town square. It’s a giant, cutsie leprechaun jumping out of a bright green beer glass. If we had any real Irishmen in this town, we’d offend the hell out of them.”
“They don’t go in for inflatable caricatures with their alcohol?”
Joker shrugged. “I didn’t look up how to celebrate St. Patty’s in Ireland - I looked up annoying American traditions.”
