Scenes I am really glad did NOT happen in the actual Mahabharata.
Having watched Star Plus’s Mahabharata adaptation, which I actually liked to an extent (thanks mostly to the actors acting as Subhadra, Arjun and Draupadi), these are some scenes that were included in the show that I am REALLY glad did not happen in the actual epic.
1. Karna mercy-killing Abhimanyu. Like, what? Since when would that git do that for the son of his biggest rival? He was probably glad that Abhimanyu got a gruesome death.
2. The entire Kunti & Karna thing. NO. Nope. Not happening. Kunti might feel guilty about “abandoning” Karna, but no way in however many hells that exist am I accepting that Arjun performed his funeral rites because he felt guilty about ‘mistreating” his elder brother. It was always Karna who mistreated Arjun, whenever he could, not the other way around.
3. The Virata War scene where Karna and Arjun are shown as equal to each other, maybe Karna as a little superior: Huh, what? Did you guys read the actual epic? Karna ran away from the battle. Arjun whipped his ass with ease. Always.
4. This one is one of my pet peeves- Arjun washing Karna’s feet. I remember squeezing my eyes shut at this scene. No way should Arjun be humiliated in any adaptation in such a horrible way for a stupid idiot who wasn’t fit to wipe his boots. (Yes, I loathe Karna.)
5. The gross misrepresentation of the Pashupatastra- Jayadharatha was NOT killed by the Pashupatastra. Had Arjun used the Pashupatastra, the entire battlefield would have been laid to waste in seconds. Arjun was far too compassionate to do that, although Yudhisthira might not have been, considering his remarks at the Swargarohana Yatra.
6. Dronacharya rejecting Karna. I’m tired of seeing this over and over again and being used by Karna fans to prove how unfair life was to their hero. Drona did accept him, just didn’t give the Brahmastra to him. And why would he when Karna explicitly stated that he wanted the missile to kill Arjun?
Side note: I really wish they had included Arjun going to heaven to learn the celestial weapons...that would have been so cool!
