I’m always surprised when I crack open a bottle of this 2011 Sylvaner from Scribe Winery in Sonoma and it’s as fresh as a 2018. Beautiful color and texture, powerful aroma, and just so fresh on the palate. Lemon and lime abound with a nice acidity and beautiful finish. I think this is the only Sylvaner grown in California, but if I’m wrong, tell me about it. I’d love to compare. If you haven’t bee n to the winery, I recommend visiting. A quick one night getaway to the tiny town of Jenner. Enjoyed this 2004 Scribe Cabernet Sauvignon on the deck of our cottage at the River’s End Inn. Behind the wine you can see the Russian River flowing into the Pacific Ocean. The view is stunning and the wine matched the view. At 16 years old the wine is aging beautifully. The color is still deep and showing no browning. I’ve had some disappointing older whites but this 2011 Scribe Riesling is not one of them. Nine years old and bursting with fruit and acid. Great body. Super aromatic. Have you had a wine made from the Sylvaner grape? We had some on our recent trip to Alsace but haven’t seen many in the US. Until I found this gem from Scribe Winery. A 2011 believe it or not. And the wine was zesty, zippy, bright, lively. Not a single sign of age. An 8 year old white wine from Sonoma that can easily age another 5-8? We also opened a 2004 Scribe Cab and it was luscious. No visual sign of oxidation and on the palate it was still bright, juicy and well balanced. Have you been to Scribe winery? I’ve had their wines but had not previously visited. What a great place! The property is stunning ...the tasting experience (paired with the perfect food) was outstanding ...and the wine was delicious. The initial pour of concrete-aged Chard was very nice. The second Chard - skin contact- was a revelation. A very nice wine, smooth, not overly funky, lots of body, aromatic. The reds were also fantastic - two Pinots, one from Petaluma Gap and one from Carneros. Different wines but both elegant. Finished with a Syrah that was spicy and earthy with some hint of oak. Thanks to Nate for the great service.
