River Road Vineyards’ 2017 Stephanie's Cuvee Pinot Noir (SRP $29): Sourced from estate and family-owned vineyards in Green Valley of Russian River Valley, this pleasing Pinot delivers flavors of cherry cola, purple stone fruit, baking spice, and cedar box with touches of vanilla bean lingering on the finish. It’s medium-bodied and nicely balanced with a touch of grip on the back-end. I recently saw where Davis Bynum was reflecting on the life and legacy of their namesake and founder. Just so happens I was enjoying their 2016 Jane’s Vineyard Pinot Noir when I saw the post on social media. Rightly called one of the icons and visionaries of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, Davis Bynum was the first to produce a single-vineyard Pinot Noir to carry the Russian River designation. The vintage was 1973 and fruit was sourced from Joe Rochioli's now prized vineyard. As for this 2016 Jane’s Vineyard Pinot Noir, it’s quite tasty and retails for around $30. It’s medium-bodied, fresh, and snappy, with a mix of wild berry, baking spice, and purple stone fruit, rounded out by fine-grained tannins and a pleasing finish. Give it a try if you see it in stores or on a wine list.
